It's about time I posted something I've made on here. I had been putting off making a frame from driftwood found on one of our local beaches for my mum until a couple of weeks ago (ran out of excuses!)

I don't really like driftwood because it's so lumpy, but I wasn't allowed to plane it so the joints aren't as tight as I would have liked.

I'd appreciate your comments on it, and you can say you don't like it because I don't either!

Very nice! My wife is a semi-pro artist/painter, and she wants a picture frame like it´s made out of drift wood... Problem is I don´t want to wait until the right kind wash up on the beach!
Does anyone know how to manually do this? Sandblasting?

Since tight "furniture grade" joints on random shapes are going to be difficult (and out of keeping), I'd have been inclined to make something like a really rough half lap, and emphasise (not hide) the joint with, say, hand forged nails.

Strangely, in the right setting, I think this sort of stuff can look quite good. In the first pic on a plain wall with a pot plant accent, the timber looks quite good...rusticated and weatherbeaten. If you had too much of these sorts of pieces then it would be OTT, but this looks OK to me - Rob

Thanks everyone

Bugbear - I only had one plank of driftwood, so I ripped it and cut off the bits which were too "rustic", leaving me with almost no room for fancy lap joints (which I would have preferred)

Cheers,

Thats a grand job Mark, if you haven't finished it yet wit any kind of oil or wax I'd be tempted (if it was mine) to lightly wash it with Lime sulphur, available at any Bonsai supplies place, try flea-bay, google this and you will see the effect that this delightfull smelling elixir has on wood
just a suggestion.

I sprayed it with caustic soda to bleach it and raise the grain. Then proceeded to drip some onto my foot and didn't feel it 'til it was too late.

I'll have a look for lime sulphur BWJ.

Fortunately there hasn't been much useful flotsam and jetsam washed up on Gower lately so no more driftwood mirrors for now! Anyway I've got a to-do list to be done first.

Cheers,
Mark

I like it! It does not look at of place at all!

Thanks! (But don't tell anyone - I don't want to make another one any time soon!)

Thanks everyone

I wasn't expecting such postive comments - it's not exactly fine craftsmanship  !!

Out of interest, any idea what I could sell stuff like this for, because it only took about an hour or so to make. Though it depends on my supply of driftwood, which is currently dwindling!
