Domino in 12mm ply

I've got some 12mm ply that I need to join.

As far as I can tell pocket holes are not good as the material is too thin (please correct me if I'm wrong) Anyone used a domino with 12mm ply? I'm concerned that 12mm might be too thin for dominos as well? As I type this I am trying to remember what the shallowest depth setting is and the size of the 4mm dominos!

Any other suggestions for joining 12mm ply? I am thinking of glueing and pinning? It's to make drawers.

Just finished something in 12mm ply. Use the smallest domino cutter and you're golden, test your depth but on the smallest cutter you can't use the lowest depth setting, doesn't go deep enough.

Did you get your knock-off adaptor yet? That's set up for it on one side.

Smallest domino is 4x20mm which should be fine for your application.

I did! I'm slightly concerned that you're tracking my every move, either that or you've got a good memory for who's doing what on the forum.

I've got a 4mm cutter and dominos so I'll have a look. Typically I just bought a Kreg K5 mainly for this project but the drawers were to heavy in 18mm MR MDF (especially with the base).

I did, with a shim I made, manage to successfully domino 9mm ply together for alignment, that was touch and go. By shim, I mean some ply and some gaffer tape. Like you, I gave pocket holes a go on the 12mm a while back...it's messy.

Do you need to use dominos? In your draw design thread I posted a picture of some draws and the joint. You could cut that with a table saw or router. I did consider biscuits but felt the continuous joint was stronger.

Looking at my domino I've got a minimum depth of 12mm. So I either need to adapt it or use a different method. I might go for a rabbet option if it can get the table set up for it.

I'm not that far from you at the western end of the Solent, PM me if you want to borrow a Domiplate which sets you up for 1/2" or 12mm material. It's not absolutely essential but it does make things a bit easier.

Yes there is a bit of set up but very quick after that.

The 4mm cutter is shorter than normal cutters so you need to subtract 10mm from the plunge depth, i.e. a 20mm plunge setting results in a 10mm deep mortice which is perfect for 4mm Dominos.

Having some 1\2\3mm perspex sheets can come in handy for getting you a flat stable base (of varying height) to plunge in from. A poor mans Domiplate if you like

Thanks guys. I hadn't seen Custards reply but realised the 4mm was shorter. (First time I'd used it) frustratingly I didn't know the 4mm cutter was the other way round in the box so bought one thinking I should have had one with my domino and then found I did!

Anyway 4mm cutter 20mm depth set (so 10mm) and all good.

I did find that my plate ( or probably my wood) wasn't quite right but I added a few strips of tape and after a couple of test cuts got my hole centralised. After that it was pretty quick to do all my joints.

I used my TS55 to cut all of my materials and then ran the sides, fronts and backs of the drawers through my router to create a 6mm groove for the drawer base to float in. Then dominoed them and glued them together.

Really pleased with the accuracy of everything. Normally I tend to make one drawer then the next so I can check for any errors before I go to far but today I sat down with excel for 30 minutes before I cut anything and did all my calculations and then went and cut it all in logical runs. It does make life much quicker as long as you don't make mistakes.

I've got to make the boxes (which will be steps) for the drawers to go in tomorrow and then assemble them all. Hopefully it will go well.

Well I did the boxes for the drawers today and all went pretty well. I've got one runner that seems slightly out but I doubt anyone else will notice. I used pocket holes for the construction. I managed to use the 19mm setting in 18mm MR MDF by shortening the hole depth. All seemed to work well. I'll take a photo of the finished thing and post it.

It's a lot of effort that nobody will really appreciate! Since taking the photo I've boarded the right side of the steps and rounded over the tops of each step.
