Does anyone own the Fujifilm 6500? I'm interested in upgrading my old camera to one of these, i've done a ton of reading and it seems decent, but I cant seem to find a concise review of how easy it is to use the menus and functions. I'll mostly be using it on self-timer so I need to know if that is any good.

Failing that, I know we have some photography fans on here, can you recommend a decent forum?

Byron,

I can't comment on that particular model but I had a Fuji 4900 for years which is one of its predecessors and has been excellent.

In terms of ease of use, the only thing I would watch out for is that some of the buttons are a bit fiddly. The menus are all pretty simple though and it takes excellent pictures.

Cheers

Do not know very much about this other than it is now discontinued - wouldn't let that stop you though - as soon as you buy anything electronic these days it is replaced with a new model :)

This site selling at good price - you may find better :)

One thing I like to do before purchasing is have a read of the manual. Think this is the one you are interested in (196 pages .pdf).

One word of warning. You may find as the LOML did that camera's that take AA batteries (even NiMh) are a pain in the butt.

I've had a Kodak DX4300 (or something to that effect) with LiIon battery for years and I can leave it with a full charge for a month or two and still pick it up and use it without charging.

LOML has now got a point and shoot 6Mp Hitachi with LiIon and it's the same.

Just my 2p worth.

Try here
I've had this camera for a few months now and it is a good camera.
I had the S5000 before which lasted about 5 years with the original re-chargeable batteries.I had 2 sets.
It was either this or the later 9000 but chose this as it would do just what i wanted.Very happy with it.

LOL - I chose the Sony H2 because it would take AA (NiMH) as they are cheap and easy to charge via a car socket and therefore easy to charge in a mini-bus when we go on trekking hols. A full charge lasts about 3 days depending on use. I love the 12x zoom for wild life pics etc.

Sony digicams are very good btw - very happy with my DSC-H2 as is SWMBO with her DSC-W70. Advantage is that we can use the same memory cards altho batteries are different. The W70 LIon batteries last forever.

As an anecdote, my son left his sony P200 in top of Scafell Pike in the Lake District where it was picked up 6 weeks later and handed in to a police station. It was just in its leather case, and despite 6 weeks exposure to the worst weather the Lake District could throw at it, was in full working condition and none the worse for wear. The fuzz traced him as he had taken pictures of his car for Autotrader and were able to trace him from the number plate. Pretty impressive all round i thought.

Byron I have the Fuji S9600 which is an excellent camera.

Although I do not know anything about the 6500 I believe Alf and Philly have one.

As for double AA batteries I think they are fine and I use AA NiMH with this 15 minute charger http://www.tantronics.co.uk/acatalog/en ... arger.html like Roger I can also use it in the car, which is great if you are out and use more batteries then you thought. What ever batteries you chose make should they are at least 2200 mAh or higher.

HTH

Thanks for all the information guy's! I was all set to buy this model, went down to Jessops, tried it out didn't like it and instead went back to my roots and purchased a Nikon (I used to be a big user/collector of Nikon SLR's).

I found the fuji to be quite heavy compared to the nikon, I didn't really like the menu system much - I prefer to have it on manual wherever possible and felt it was a bit clunky, the Nikon seemed a better fit for me, I could get to all the functions very quickly, and the nice thing is with the F mount, I can use my old Nikkor prime lenses :)

So I picked up a D40 with lens and 1GB card and can't wait to test it out, it should be a marked improvement over my 6 year old Nikon Coolpix 950.

:)

Just for info, it was a Fuji camera that the other half bought and I got some 2700mAH NimH batteries to try to sort it out.

In the space of one evening wedding receiption the camera was dead. Just as well I took mine as well. (DX6490 10x zoom)

Oddly enough I pinched my wifes fuji last weekend (my own batteries were flat) and the last time her fuji was used was March this year over 6 months ago and I got pictures OK and they are the AA rechargeable type Mah. I think it really comes down to the condition of the batteries,.

Yeah but in the space of an evening, especially at a wedding, you could take a 100 or a 1000 photos and use a lot of flash. It also depends how batteries are treated, as to how long they last.
