Evening all,
I have a friend coming for dinner tomorrow and he is diabetic. He can't take sugar, but am I right in thinking I could do a dessert sweetened with honey and that would be OK?
I'd ring him up and ask him except that he is away until tomorrow pm and I'd rather be a bit more prepared than that!
Thanks all
Steve

According to my wife who is a Hospital Pharmacist - the answer is no.
Honey contains sugar among other things.

Somebody with Type 2 (which is generally controlled by diet) may get away with it - but better err on the safe side and use other non sugar sweeteners like Splenda.

Steve,

You could always use a sugar substitute like spenda or canderel, as Harbo suggests.

If your friend is Type 1 diabetic (insulin dependant), sugar is not really a big deal as he could adjust his insulin dose.
If he is Type 2 I'd stick with the sugar substitute as he needs to control his diabetes via his diet.

By the way, if you do go with the sugar substitute, there are some good dessert recipes on the splenda and canderel websites.

Hope this helps

Mark

Thanks for all that.
I am used to coping with friends who are allergic to garlic, flour, rhubarb strawberries, potatoes, chilli. One is also veggie. But it's been ages since I've had to do sugar-free.

Menu:

Chicken, floured and sauted, with some garlic, bacon and coriander, in a sweet red pepper sauce with a dollop of creme fraiche, served on a bed of fusilli tricolore.

Cheeseboard! I've got some Long Clawson Stilton. The best.

:)
