De-rusting an odd nut and bolt

I was given this nut and bolt recently. A bit rusty, but useful looking.

Turns out to be a bit of an odd size. The thread pitch is metric, bang on 2mm pitch:

but the diameter is only 15mm.

That's not a preferred ISO size. As far as I can see, if you do want a 15mm thread, it should be a fine pitch option only - 1mm. So what to do?

I tried removing some of the rust - I got it a bit better just by licking it:

Anyone have any idea what I should do next?

drop it in some Coke or vinegar overnight.

ISO Course thread - no M15 sizing
ISO fine thread - M15 x 1mm OR M15 x 1.5mm pitch

But you're right no M15 x 2mm pitch

Drop it in some kind of mild acid, as previous poster says vinegar is useful and everyone has it. Then scrub it with an old toothbrush clean the acid off thoroughly and lightly oil..

You can get M15 x 2.0 taps and dies but it's hard to find any fasteners! The 70mm long ones I did see were £20... Per bolt.... :shock:

I was going to say how the tip of the thread looked to be gone and it might have been an m16.
Now im just going to be annoyed.

As pay back im going to turn a record no. 4 into a race car. You can consider it your penance and its all your fault.

I don't know about the bolt and washer but there should be nuts in the nut.
