If it wasn't bad enough them changing the Building Regs regarding window thermal performance, see this thread here, they are now talking about stopping the use of machines (especially woodworking machines) inside garages and sheds to stop noise or require a heavy investment in noise insulation! Looking at the proposed 'solutions' it seems to me it would be quicker to knock down the garage and start again! Madness.

Maybe we should start up one of those e-petitions on the Govt website?

The current regulations 'Approved Document E - Resistance to the passage of sound (2003 Edition) can be found here.

I do care about the noise i make! I know my neighbour doesn't hear me and don't work out of business hours at all. I don't like hearing other projects going on down the road or the screaming kids next door. I don't mind kids making noise its just when they scream for no reason and their parents do nothing to stop them from doing so.

Some people just go about their thing without a care and concern for those around them so i can kind of see the need for such rulings. We wouldn't need a nanny state if people did care about what they were doing and who it is affecting.

Buildings are made with a purpose in mind, and if one wants to do woodworking i think they should be either retro-fitted or rebuilt with that purpose in mind. Planners are very loud!!! I feel bad every time i turn mine on. By the end of this year though i should be completely sound proofed and warm and cozy.

I do think it sucks though for hobbyists. It is a huge expense and probably would limit the amount of people able to peruse woodworking as a hobby. But woodworking is one of those things that drive us to do what we need to be able to do what we love.

It is a very debatable issue.

LOL... got me, leaving the computer till april fools is over, hangs head in shame...

Good one, Rog!

Got me as well! :D

I'm fortunate that I can do most of my machining during the week, meaning the noise I make at weekends is minimal. Even if you don't have that luxury, I think it pays to do any planing or thicknessing (for example) in shorter bursts, wherever possible. That way, they're less likely to complain as the disturbance is irregular rather than prolonged.

EDIT - the more replies this thread gets, the more people who haven't yet clicked it will take it seriously!!

fortunatley I`ve just removed all the motors from my machines and fitted hand cranks to reduce the noise impact :-$

It seemed entirely plausible seeing as the OP was Roger the Ranter

But it reminds me, is it LN who usually does a good one today.

SURELY they can't be serious

I have just spent lots of dosh with Part Beedin P or whatever that was about and done the roof so it doesn't leak or rain inside and now THIS...

That's IT! I am moving overseas....

The country is going to the dogs....

I'm lucky my neighbour did a few alterations to his home without planning permission,, so when he came round to say he may complain to the council, I asked him was it the same office you report people who haven't applied for planning permission? Seems like he doesn't mind the tone of my P/T after all.
