I've just shellac'ed them and so far so good!

Beat me before I saw the thread and suggested it. Shellac is what fire restoration folks use around here to seal stuff that's got smoke damage but is otherwise fine and doesn't need to be replaced.

Plus, it's easy to reverse if you don't like it.
