credit note or refund??

bought a bed the other day as a present for my daughter, on delivering it they find it wont go up the stairs, so returned it to the shop and promptly displayed it again. She then asked for me to have a refund but the guy has said no, he will only give a credit note, is this right?

It surely depends on the retailer's terms and conditions of sale. These are normally printed on the back of the order form or invoice. Cedit notes are a common way to settle, especially when the retailer is not to blame for goods not suiting the buyer. In the circumstances you describe, it would not have been unusual for the retailer to credit (or refund) only after deducting a handling charge. Most trade outlets charge for returns to stock unless otherwise agreed at the time of sale.

If it was online then Distance selling regulations mean you can get a refund.
