All the time I have been turning and have not yet had the pleasure of turning blackthorn or would I recognise it.
I have been give this from an old hedge which I would like to have a go at turning It measure about 4" in diameter(this is just an off cut from the end so you can see the grain better)

That looks exactly like Blackthorn Dal, that reddish colour is very much a characteristic, it seems to hold it well after seasoning too. The white flowers could well be key too as Blackthorn is now coming into flower, very white, small flower, abundant along the stem.

Nice Elder bowls Bob!, got more character in them than it usually has. It does smell odd, but then so do the leaves. Elderflower wine though is a personal favourite!

Bob, not sure what bowlsk's are :) but they sure look good.

And if Dalboy's pics are of blackthorn I shall have to add that to my 'wanttofind' list. Looks nice.

There is still one more like this left which is coming out about 3 1/2ft long and again 4" in diameter better ask if she would like me to chop it down

This piece I have has been sitting in my log store since last year

That is a beauty Pete!

The goblet was about 6 inches tall Graham, I have another which is just over 9" I will pop a pic up sometime. They are more awkward than difficult to do as I use a string steady, the awkward aspect comes from having to work around the steady, it gets in the way a lot!

I can sort of picture that, any reason you use a string one rather than the usual type ? A pic of that would be good as well.

I'll do some photography in the next day or so and pop them up Graham.

When I first saw these videos (a year ago) I was so impressed, especially that the turning was done with a Bedan, outstanding skill. It was from these I got the idea for the string steady, such a useful item.

If you are careful you can turn these thin spindles without a steady, keep it reasonably slow and don't over tighten the tail stock. This one is 45mm tall and the stem was done seperately to 3mm thick. It is harder doing them this long mind if you do it as one piece like Kims.
