Could anyone ID this wood please

This is one of two small pieces I came across but have no idea at all as to what kind of wood it is, it is harder than iron to turn no matter how sharp my tools are ( or were )

Possibly laburnum though the colour change from the dark heart wood to the lighter sap wood is usually more abrupt and its easy to turn.

Looks very similar to Laburnum, The scale closeup showing the flecking makes it difficult to compare with the pics I have.This is a sample for comparison

I disagree I'm afraid, I don't think its laburnum, I've done a couple of things in this timber and its hard, but not iron hard....this is one of them, my duck carving - Rob

Judging from certain areas of the vase I had a suspicion that it might be Elm...

I does look like laburnum but as you say the hard working quality is inconsistent with lab...

Has the duck been stained or coloured?

I think it could be Acacia. This does become very hard when dry and the transition from heartwood to sapwood in your picture look very much like it.
