Possibly laburnum though the colour change from the dark heart wood to the lighter sap wood is usually more abrupt and its easy to turn.

I disagree I'm afraid, I don't think its laburnum, I've done a couple of things in this timber and its hard, but not iron hard....this is one of them, my duck carving - Rob

Judging from certain areas of the vase I had a suspicion that it might be Elm...

I does look like laburnum but as you say the hard working quality is inconsistent with lab...

Has the duck been stained or coloured?

I think it could be Acacia. This does become very hard when dry and the transition from heartwood to sapwood in your picture look very much like it.

Hi Mark

Welcome to the forum, good to have you onboard.

I've taken the web address out of your signature as it will get caught by our spamulator until you have posted a few more.

BTW, it's already available via the www button on all of your posts.

Cheers
Neil

Hi Mark, welcome!

Will you be attending the Nat Forest W'Fair this year?

(I'm still ploughing me way through M'sr Baluet's finest  )

Hi Graham
No I won't be able to make it this year as I'll be at Westonbirt
(ran out of M Balluet's finest at Xmas - I can see another trip is required!)
