Correct hand tool for jointing?

Thanks for all the replies! Im starting to think that either approach would be good enough for this particular job, it really doesnt matter which.

But, I think its now clear how to go about this with hand tools. Because I like planing, and I dont like sanding, Im going to keep using my jointer plane. However, rather than trying to plane the 6mm strip on the bench, Im going to laminate an 18mm strip between the 20mm maple strips, then rip down the middle and plane the glued up halves to 26mm thinkness before gluing up to the central lamination. This way, i wont be jointing a strip less than ~20mm thick. It will just take a little longer.

In a machine shop I'd use a drum sander, no doubt about it, but Im doing this for fun so I dont need to get too worried about how long this will take me! :D

Bugbear, that link is so interesting, it is difficult to imagine with modern science that we cannot say conclusively how it works. Or some might say a little mystery makes life more interesting.
