Hi,

I was doing some pen turning yesterday and noticed my lathe doesn't seem to be turning true (if that is the right way to describe it). Near the headstock things are fine but the further away I get the more 'wobble' seems to happen. I've always suspected this but have just assumed it was me. I did clean out the taper so the mandrel would fit in properly. What else can I do to clean things up?

Cheers,

Dave

I hasve a 900 as well and i generally clean it with the dust extractor also using an airline to blow out crevices etc.

the other thing to ensure is that the bed is clear of cack which could otherwuise lift the tailstock.

that said if things are fine at the headstock and your tailstock morse taper is clean then is may not be the lathe

two points that imediatelly occur are

a) are you sure the tail centre is dead central in the work piece - if its not wobble will increase as you go towards the tailstock

and

b) are you using dead centres or a live one - if they are the dead set that came with the lathe as standard these always work loose due to friction enlargling the "hole"where tha tail centre runs - things are much improved if you buy the axminster live centre (circa 20 notes i think)
