Well its another 6 weeks gone since the last post on this project and the lid has got worse.

So ripped off the supporting strips and put the lid through the thicknesser and took off the 3ply backing.

Finished off using a rotary sander disk.

Within a few minutes the lid has returned to a reasonable flatness, so leaving overnight and hoping to get this job off my hands shortly.

You have just fallen foul of a regular hazard for marquetarians. If you glue one side of a piece of plywood which you are using as a baseboard and lay veneer on it, the glue will tighten as it cures and warp the piece. Marquetarians counter this by gluing a balancing veneer on the underside of the plywood.

Perhaps you could redesign your lid with this in mind if you still wish to use a plywood baseboard.

Gill you are quite right. I thought I would get away with it. But got caught out. I wanted a slender lid and pure marquetary (its only 5mm thick) I did not feel happy with, so trying a lipped edge this morning.

Taken the easy option out of this box problem,

It fitted the carcass this morning without any wobble, so will clean up has soon as the random strip job gets underway.
