Turning MDF into gold in a northern town
While my Cheshire Walnut is aclaimatising I thought I'd slip another job in. This is for a customer who bought a cherry dresser from New Heights before they went bust last year and now wants a matching one for the other alcove in their living room. This is the one I've got to use as inspiration;

I started off yesterday making the legs and side panels for the base unit. Unfortunately I left my camera at home. This is how far I got;

I also machined the stiles and rails for the doors and glued up the tops to the two units, as well as lipping the veneered MDF needed for the base carcass.

I started this morning by assembling the sides to the base unit with Dominos;

I then turned my attention to the componants for the base unit carcass. I trimmed the lipping using the latest incarnation of the 'Tovey Trimmer'.

I then put the carcass together with glue and screws.

And then attached the side panels;

A couple of doors and that was me for the day.

Tomorrow I need to shoot the doors in, do the edge treatment to the tops, and make the upper section.

See you tomorrrow night...

Cheers

zzzzzzzzz boring.. try and speed up old mate. :shock:

Fine work master.

Looking good brad. I see the workshop tidyness is slipping slightly :D

Is Tovey Mk1 lipping cutter I have in my workshop worth a bit more now.

Cheers

Jon

Nice work Brad. Don't show this to WoodBloke

It's looking very nice. You are getting good at painting that MDF.

It's a shame you didn't enter this in the competition, Brad, you seem on course to finish in time for the deadline at midnight tomorrow! :D

Wouldn't be any time to paint it though :lol: - Rob

He already has, Rob, he's just an ace at 'graining'. No shots of raw material.

Looking at the photos I see you're right. I hadn't noticed!

I'll maybe have a sweep up before starting work today.

Nah.

That one's just a router with a bit of MDF bolted to the base. THIS one is the Tovey Trimmer! :lol:

Meanwhile I've just remembered that I've got to learn how to use a lathe today to turn the door knobs!

:shock:

Didn't get to spend a lot of time on this today as I had to go and supervise the completion of a kitchen that a fitter has been working on this week. I got the base finished though, the doors hung, and the carcass of he top made;

I should get it completed and oiled in time for delivery on Wednesday.

Did you use a template for those legs?

I just made a tamplate from 6mm MDF and used it to draw the outline on all four sides of each leg blank. I then cut to the line on the bandsaw, taping the offcut back on after each cut to give me a line to work to as I flipped the blank over on to the adjacent side.

I cleaned up with block plane, belt sander, and ROS.

Cheers
Brad

sounds a lot easyier than trying to shaping them on the spindle moulder, you would need two templates for a start, ring fence, and maybe have to move the block up and down as the legs splay out quiet a bit both ways.then you would still need to sand them. :roll:

will look nice when its all oiled

If I was doing a big batch of them I would set up the spindle moulder but for four it wasn't worth the hassle.

I could have done with something like this though

Well, here's my first ever attempt at turning.

Actually, this is my third attempt as the first two broke before i got them finished!

I was quite chuffed with myself by the end.

Here's the finished dresser in the client's house and with a big cheque in my pocket

She used the word 'perfect' at least ten times.

:lol:

Three and a half days in total.

Cheers

Well Done Brad.

It makes you think "I could do that" (but I bloody couldn't)
