And if this is an issue, what are the alternatives? How secure is mobile broadband using the mobile phone networks?

It's only an issue for sites that do not have a secure connection such as the one you get when you access an https site. So any finance site will be fine as will most ecommerce sites. Ok - you're still potentially vulnerable to a 'man-in-the-middle' attack but the risks of this happening are much much lower than someone sniffing the data out of the ether when you access a normal http site.
