Cheques going out of fashion ?

No filling stations up here take cheques any more, Mrs Scrums reports that her hairdresses won't soon.....is there a hidden agenda that someone's hidden from me ?

I have never used nor understood cheques. What's the point? I find it terribly inconvenient when someone asks for one. You have to find the book, then find a pen, then post it somewhere (which entails finding an envelope and something they call a stamp), then you have to wait for them to cash it and when they do, it can take 7 days! :twisted: :roll:

I do get a few paying with internet banking now which is less hastle although quite a few banks only allow £10,000 per dat to each receipient. And there are always the ones who want to pay in cash :wink: :wink:

Most of my clients pay me by cheque. I guess that this is because the transaction is normally taking place in their home where the cheque book is to hand.

I don't take cards, and never will. It's too expensive. If a client comes to the workshop, wants to pay me some money and doesn't have their chequebook with them, I direct them to the cashpoint 100 yards away!

Like Jason, I approve of cash. :wink: :wink:

More people however, are paying me direct over the internet. I have started putting my bank details on my order forms for this purpose. My guess is that this will replace cheques completely in the next few years.

I hope it doesn't replace cash, though.

Wonder what it will be like when everyone uses cards?? Ever heard of identity theft big problem over here...people stealing peoples names and numbers.Useing them to run up big bills everywhere.

Given that you have to present a cheque guarantee card when paying by cheque, and that this normally doubles as a debit card anyway, I can think of only one reason why anyone would want to use a cheque in this situation...

Some might think that the reason for taking cash is that it goes in the back pocket away from the taxman. They might think that. I couldn't possibly comment. :wink:

The last time I was in the US (June) I used my Company Amex card (which does have a Pin number) without once being asked to sign or type the number, at least 15 times! So it's no real surprise that CC thieves get away with it.

I'd much rather have the protection of plastic, and I certainly wouldn't accept a cheque from someone I didn't know (on either side of the pond)

I don't normally carry much cash these days because most shops etc. are happy to accept cards, and I don't normally bother carrying a cheque book with me. This occasionally means I get stuck.

We've been travelling around in our camper this past couple of weeks and I'm glad I packed the good old fashioned cheque book as most camp sites we've been to don't accept cards.

So theres still use for the old slips of paper yet.

Another reason for using cards over cheques is you can more easily keep a check on your pennies. I've written several cheques this week but the money doesn't go out of my bank for several days so I have to be extra careful about withdrawing the few pennies that are in the account.

Incidentally, we're still on the road, we are parked up on a site with wi-fi - isn't technology wonderful...

I preferred to use cheques as the counterfoils were attached to the book so I could keep a track on what I was spending. Even though the money didn't leave my account for a few days I considered it gone straight away and never got confused.

I use a debit card now purely for convenience, but always prefer to use cash when I can, it's more instant.

Internet banking is best, we prefer our customers to use it as the money is cleared instantly and we don't have to queue up to pay in.
We still don't accept credit/debit cards though, due to the cost of taking them so we're happy to accept cheques (or cash) - worth bearing in mind if you're coming to see us at a show!

Just be wary of what you use wi-fi for. It's so easy to sit there with a wi-fi laptop and monitor all your network traffic.

I take your point Roger. I have Symantec Firewall installed so feel fairly safe. Not that I really have anything to hide.

Brian, I think that you may be missing the danger. I wasn't referring to someone accessing your laptop. Unless you operate an encrypted link between your laptop and the wifi node (which is difficult to do, I believe, with a public access point such as the one that you are using) then all the data is transmitted 'in clear' and so accessible by anyone with a wifi sniffer program. Some sites that you are accessing may encrypt the data between your laptop and so these are not a problem but you may be accessing other sites that don't.

It's the same reason why I don't like entering my Chip'N'Pin details on a handheld reader. It's a non-encrypted wifi connection and so my card details and PIN are readily sniffable.

I think I get what you are saying Roger. If I were to log onto my bank for instance, then someone with a sniffer may well be able to catch my details.

Is that what you are saying?

And if this is an issue, what are the alternatives? How secure is mobile broadband using the mobile phone networks?

I think we may be getting way off topic here. maybe we should start another thread.
