I started this thread because my daughter asked me to repair some chipboard shelves. Well I went to stay with my other daughter over Easter and she had an IKEA dining table. It was made of real wood - random length strips about 1.5" x 1", with the shortest length being about 2". It had some gaps between the sections but overall looked reasonable. The thing is, it was SOLID - no shaking or wobbling when I pushed on the side or corner. It cost £90 ish complete with 4 self assembly but again quite sturdy chairs - not posh but perfectly servicable and quite reasonably priced I thought.
So IKEA really can produce goods which are fit for purpose. But if I was in the market for shelves and table, and had bought the shelves first, there's no way I would have gone back to IKEA. I don't think they do themselves any favours by supplying shoddy goods.
