Hi,

I wish to purchase a carving vise for my father-in-law as a present.

I was thinking of getting one of these:

What is not clear is where I still need to get the
Dog-Hole Mount Assembly and/or
2" Mounting Plate with Rod

I think the dog-hole is for temporary fixing to a surface?

Can anyone clarify this?

From experienced carvers - any other alternatives?

Thanks in advance

The vice can be bolted to any worktop with bolts in the four slots.

The dog mounting allows it to be quickly removed from the bench when not in use or to a different position.

The 2" plate is a smaller version of the top plate if you are working on smaller items and is not used for fixing the vice.

Brian,
I use this vice which is the best I have ever seen. It is very heavy and sturdy but allows you to reposition the work very easily and quickly whilst providing rock solid support. It is not cheap however!

Koch's site with the vice page is here http://www.koch.de/en/?sid=3e11c1a0c639 ... de449f2e5e

Various carving supports are available. The one shown is great for relief carvings, it can be used for carving in the round but a dedicated top plate is also available that is better for this.

The Lee Valley is excellent if you decide on that. A top notch product .....

You can get it here (in case you didn't know)! Vice which will save you an AWFUL lot of hassle with import and postage costs.
