Yes I know it is not woodwork, but you all give good advise.
I have an old rover 214 car and when I start it up it makes a high pitch whistle then stops when I drive off.
Is it the fan belt?

I drive an Astra van for work, I had a similar problem, it was the belt that goes to the alternator. it just needed adjusting and has been fine since

yes, its probably the belt - if not think about the alternator bearing (you will soon know if it is that as it will get worse) or a squealing water pump - additive from halfords will fix that.

Try the rover forum http://forums.mg-rover.org/

excellent (I have a 75 and have found plenty of answers and posted some)

Mine was water pump eventually I had to replace it, belts usually squeal as you pull away from a stand still as the loads feed through the system
I'm with Russell, sounds like the water pump.

I'd go with water pump. My old Corolla started doing this on and off and eventually 'cooperated' by doing it when I was by the garage. Initially they thought it may be an air leak, but spray smoke in a can showed it wasn't. They fiddled with the belts and showed it was the bearings on the water pump.

Fixed it.
It was the belt, just hope that was it and it dose not come back.
If it returners I will change the water pump but am keeping my fingers crossed.

I thought it was the little man under the bonnet giving the all clear to move off

Sorry, was just looking at your avatar and got confused
