Not quite on topic, but I've been surprised at how big an influence on Volvo's design department the (very rare) 1800ES of the late 1960s has had. It had a very distinctive rear window/tailgate, which reappeared on the 480 of the mid 1980s and now has appeared again on one of their current models that I noticed in the village yesterday.
The guy who designed the 1800ES must be even more in his dotage than I am :D

Do you mean on the C30?

C30 T5, haven't we seen one before?

Oh, yeah Focus ST.

Not the Fabia - it's based on the Polo...

Must be the Octavia then, but you get my drift.

There is another thing in common with all these cars.

When purchased in Britain we pay over the odds, but thats another arguement.

Twice the price and the steering wheel on the wrong side.

There's two good reasons not to.

Over the top new safety regs and excessive use of in house designers are a big part of the problem. German cars look like Beachy Head, French cars have that stupid droopy nose/underbite thing going on, Spanish cars are German cars, English cars are made in their tens which leaves us with the Italians.

They still know the benefits of using design houses in Milan and Turin and consequently turn out some great looking cars.

I just wish that Peter Wheeler was still alive and encouraging his designers to go mad at TVR

According to my mate who is service manager for a main ford dealer, the latest ford KA is based on same floor pan as a fiat 500 and my daughters' new fiesta is a punto :?

So what is everybody driving on here? - guess most of us are driving the same car under the skin

Iv'e got a BMW 320d, wife has a Mini Cooper and my van is a Renault trafic (otherwise known as Nissan or Vauxhall clones). Happy with the cars but the van isn't a patch on my previous VW Transporter.

well i'm driving a Bugati Veron and riding a harley Vrod...

I wish

In reality i'm driving a 55 plate peugot partner van / a 10 plate ford ranger (the latter belongs to work)

and i'm not currently riding anything because after getting knocked off by some numpty (for the third time in as many years) a couple of years back and having my arm in a cast for a broken collar bone, I decided someone might be trying to tell me something 'bout fast bikes

Renualt Espace (pile of french dogsh*t)
Ford Transit (pile of rust)

When I get a chance to go for a ride it is either the gsxr1100 dragbike or the bandit6 chop. Next year I wanna shoehorn a ZZR motor into my Z400, should be fun

Im going to make a small car from wood. Chassis, body etc. Dump a bike engine in there. Jobs a gooden.

Im actually not kidding, been working on the plans for 3 years. Hopefully gonna start next year

at least bikes dont suffer from the same saminess as cars

mate of mine is riding this

Titan Gecko , one of only 3 in the countrty when he bought it, and worth significantly more than my van ;)

thats his fair weather bike - he also has a fatboy for when he wants to go out in the rain

Nick I think you are about sixty years too late for that one. I think the real reason for them all being the same now is all down to cost. One look at the mechanics of todays cars will show that they are all made from cheaper materials and lots of plastic with tons of electronics to help sell them at their grossly inflated prices. Of course there are exceptions to the rule but not everyone can afford a Veyron can they? (What have I started)

BMW540i for daily drive
JAG XJS for the weekend
Hilux Pickup for collecting wood, big heavy power tools etc
