Yesterday I found one of these:

I found one before, 5 years ago. It's not quite as exotic as my flintlock mainspring vice, but it's pretty unusual.

And now I have two(*)!

(*) which is two more than I need.

I like that a lot - can I join the waiting list for the next one you find?

Is there any utilitarian purpose to the holes and slits on the thumbscrew? Would it have been attached to a cord and carried about? I do agree that it is very pleasingly decorative with those sweetly filed curves.

I don't know.

Don't get me started - I've got "some" dividers, calipers, hand vices etc that are gorgeous, in the same filed and chamfered way.
