can you recommend a belt sander ?

my trusted Elu has just let me down, with a bad smell of burning motor, and some pieces of string falling off the motor compartment.
so i need to find its replacement.
I would like something fairly quiet, in 100mm if possible, sub £200, and decent quality. preferably one that can be used on its back too.

i'll avoid the green stuff by bosh, anything by black and decker, but i am pretty much open minded regarding the rest..
I was thinking of a makita or Aeg.
what would you good people recommend ?
is there any brand that stands out as far as belt sanders are concerned ?

I have a Makita but 3", which has variable speed and can be set down on it's back. I am really pleased with it, and have had it for 6 years now with no problems.
I am a great fan of Makita kit anyway, but I am not a professional - someone more knowledgeable may have differing views.

Another vote for Makita here....I have the 9404, a 4" machine, which is lighter than my previous 3" . I looked into thise quite carefully when the old one died 5 or 6 years ago, and a lot of the site carpenters I spoke to said Makita for belt sanders. I use it one its side all the time.

I got the Makita 9404 from Axminster 6 months back, it came with 50 free belts cost £150.
Just looked on their website it is now £166 with 25 belts

I am tempted, eventhough the MHB-50 is not listed. some of the parts are probably reused thoughout the models. But i am needing the sander urgently...
The Elu is probably older than me. I started dismentling it, to find the problem, but i couldnt get to the rotor, as it looks like a specialist tool is required to get the back drum out.

I have got a Festool BS 75 E which is excellent but almost twice your budget. For your budget I would also look at the makitas or the blue Bosch ones. It depends on the type of work you do but if you need to sand large flat areas it would be worth getting a sander that can take a sanding frame as it improves the finish and stops the sander digging in.

I have a hitachi 110mm x whatever the makita etc are, point is it has 10mm over the other 100mm models, which is good at times. Only trouble is it is hard work getting the belts. It is the SB110. I got 2 of 'em from an auction, but they are so good I would now pay retail for a replacement if needed.
You may be able to pick up a model cheap of the bay, alternatively look for a reputable model/make and ask for/look for wear around the belt; I have had belt sanders where the previous owner has had the belt trcking out and worn a groove in the body. Other than that I would say 2nd hand sanders are a reasonable bet.
As stated the makkita 100mm model is good, as is the Bosch IMHO.

There are good bargains to be had for cash ATM

you can get a festool bs 75e for about £200 if you don't go for the systainer, etc (think mine was £210)

it is way better than the dewalt it replaced - DW433

only 75mm though not 100mm as requested

Thing is, the Makita doesn't come with a frame AFAIK. The blue Bosch does but that's 3" wide. Festool is out on price. Are there any other makes of 4" sanders that have a frame option?

Ryobi do one but I have only used it a couple of times so can't really say how good it is and it comes with the sanding frame.

Roger, I had the same problem with that Sainsburys ad... :x If you hover over it, you should see a "Block" tab appear over the top-right hand corner of the box (in Firefox, anyway). Click that and you'll (hopefully!) never see it again!
