We even went through sharpening one of my chisels as well .

Once again Ray , a BIG thank you

And a big thanks to everyone else who has helped or commented on my posts :p

Thats great! Well done Argee

I have to agree with the sentiments, this forum is indeed excellent and full of very knowledgable and affable people. Mel espeically helped me out alot with my workshop and even visited to show me how to do it right and kindly donated some very useful goods!

Maybe we should have at the end of the year a UKWorkshop Oscars and reward those who have made the most contributions.

You're absolutely right Blister. Since I have joined this forum, I have learnt so much. Much more than I would have by taking any evening courses. Everyone is very willing to help and quite often, as you say, go above and beyond.

Thank you everyone.

if only to re-iterate what blister and co have said, i can only agree and add my thanks to all who have replied to any of my posts, and say that just reading through the differant posts what great ideas and knowledge and most importantly for newbies, the help offered and advice given freely to any and all who enter!! does it get any better? i cant think how it could!! :D :D :D :D

p.s. lovely bowl !

Hah! Dunno who Ray thinks he's kidding - a pathetic excuse to get good drooling time over all your toys, er, tools.

But really - nice one, Ray. =D> I've been on the receiving end of quite astounding acts of generosity from forum members I've never met, and indeed fellow woodworkers in general seem to be an extraordinary bunch of people. Oscars all round if you ask me. :D

Cheers, Alf

blister, i agree wholeheartedly, when i had no idea of a lathe russell came back and offered me some tuition foc. but as always its sods law that i have not had the chance to use my lathe yet. but this weekend is the time. us beginners do need help and i must say this forum is the best there is, SO TO ALL YOU UNSUNG HEROS (you know who you are ) a BIG BIG THANK YOU from all us beginners. :eek:ccasion5:

Nice one Ray/Blister.
I would just like to agree with what as already been said.
Nice bowl too.

Paul.J.

p.s.Ray fancy a trip to Brum :D :D

Yup,

I'll second or third or whatever that....I've been here about a year now - got a B*****g from a mod over my first post, but whoever reads forum rules?

Great place to be, whether absolute newbie, skilled amateur or pro'.......can always benefit from other peoples tips and mistakes.

Chris.

Agreed, over a period of years I have tried several forums and not stayed too long.
But this forum has held me, mainly, as Byron put it, because of the affability of everyone, if I want a heated argument there are plenty of suppliers, customers or relatives I can turn to.

Ray going to Blister was a very generous act, the way he answers questions is generous and that is how I view the forum members.

Any forum depends on the support of its long standing members. I'm a 3000+ post member on a photography forum and know what it is like answering repeat questions - and doing it tactfully.

So I'll add my thanks for those that have tolerated my repeat questions with good grace :)

I will say though that the site search here does not help matters. Maybe it needs a help menu to get the best out of it but I find it very difficult to get relevant old information on a topic and I'm no stranger to computers.

I echo with everything that has been said above. You'll not find a friendlier and more helpful bunch of folks.

I agree with RobertMP about the search. While that is out of our control maybe we could run a set of stickies with links to existing threads...based on all the favourite topics that keep coming up?

Or a stickie with woodworking 101's (such as what is a planer) or what to look for but with an emphasis on actual use. By that I mean is it for hobbyist (not meant in a pejorative way) use or professional use. The forum has members with a very wide range of experience and a professional woodworker or cabinet maker will have different criteria by which they judge equipment or pass comment than, say, a hobbyist. This can be reflected in the responses and without knowing where someone is coming from (if you get my drift) it's often hard to ascertain if the comment is relevant to your own circumstances or not.

What more can i add to whats already been said, well since been a member on here i have recived & read sound advice on many subjects which has given me some confidance to at least have a go which i would,nt of attempted before,i recently joined another site (because im nosey) to find 6/10 questions were answered with ''google is your friend'',which ive never seen on here as all querys are answered with proper replys.

Thank you all

On the search front try using the Google Site Search.

For instance enter:

glue site:www.ukworkshop.co.uk/forums/

in the google search box and it comes up with all thread entries with Glue in the text.

You can then narrow it down with "search within results".

say for "Titebond" which again narrows it down.

Thanks for the kind comments! To be fair, the task was made easier by the fact that Blister had a very good lathe to work with, plus copious amounts of enthusiasm.

All I had to do was to re-inforce some basic rules and techniques and away he went! I'm sure that we'll see some great work from that massive Poolewood Euro 2000, once he gets all his chisels, gouges, etc. sharpened correctly. Luckily, he's already made a very good contact at a turning club, so I think that the sharpening will progress well too.

It was great to meet you, Blister, also your Dad and Dennis. In case anyone was wondering about all that turning kit that Blister scored - allow me to confirm that it definitely IS the bargain of the century! :)

Ray.

Ray - nice one and Blister, we now expect to see lots more pics of some good turned pieces from the lathe :D - Rob

Hi Blister,

As Dom has said I also visit several other sites (Not all woodworking) but I keep comming back here because

(a) the members really are not only friendly but polite too, and I regret to say that this is something which is sadly lacking in society at large (and therefore reflected in the other sites)

(b) the membership has an accumulated 'font of knowledge' which it would be hard to find anywhere else IMHO

I've had a lot of help from people here, too numerous to mention, but I would like to thank Mel for clicking on my link (On DV In 'General Chat') and signing the visitor book. Nice one Mel.

I do sometimes wonder why folks who are interested in wood are like this, as mentioned above it's not IMO typical of society in general. I don't know the answer, but just pray it stays this way for a long long time :D :D :D

I think woodworkers are generally nicer people because it's a very traditional craft and it breeds respect and old values. Even though i'm young I do feel 'older' in the sense of respect, work ethic and craftmanship. I don't think many aspects in todays society promotes those things..

Anyway, that was all a bit serious. One thing I would say about Mel - is despite being a northerner he's a top fella :)

I just tried the Google search and it was so much better it is unreal!

Can't the standard search be replaced with the Google one? It would save a lot of frustration and duplicates. I don't need to start a thread to answer my new query now :)
