I was in a local tool store the other day and compared two carpenter squares and they didn't match each other by quite a bit =s. I can hardly understand how people can sell these when they arnt accurate, thats their whole job to be accurate.

What level of error will the tasks you have in mind tolerate? 1mm? 1/100 of an inch? 1/1000 of an inch? 1/10000 of an inch?

I mostly want it for setting up my machinery, like checking fences, blades are at 90 degrees and my drill press table.

Word of warning, I have the workzone set, got them cheap on offer in Aldi or Lidl whichever it was. They're not terrible, but they're not accurate either. The big one is out by about 2mm on its length, the smaller ones probably out by the same angle, but it shows less on the shorter length.

If you can be bothered I presume you could fix the accuracy of these the same way that you would with a carpenter's square - by denting it on the "short" side of the angle with a pin/nail punch untill it corrects. Difficult where the whole angle is held inside the aluminium back like it is, but, just maybe it could work...

finally found the set i had in college, i'm pretty sure its the same set i got mine from axminster i seem to remember the set is made by soba, i used the squares only yesterday i bought them about 5 years ago. over that time i have used all the items in the kit the auto punch is great for marking where you need to drill and the sliding square can be used to find the depth of a whole etc.
