Buying a Wadkin Table Saw - Transport Issues!

Hello everyone! Would just like to make my first post by saying that I think I have stumbled across my perfect forum! The projects section is fantastic!

I have just started my first workshop in Bristol and its already got some decent, if not scary, tools in it such as a 26" Wadkin Planar/Thicknesser, an old Dewalt Crosscut and an extremely loud Mardon dust extractor.

I am in desperate need of a table saw and am looking to purchase a Wadkin. I am not sure of the serial number or model but my question is, how easy are they to dismantle and is it possible to take off the cast iron top etc.

If I buy it I will need to collect it myself and might not have a van to do so so it would be going in the back of my (face grimace) Fiat Punto!

If dismantled would it be possible to move such a tool by car?

Also have any of you had any time with a similar tool, are they upto scratch?

Someone will be along to sort out your pictures.

A Wadkin will be extremely heavy, without knowing which model and someone like Scrit, I have no idea how far down you can dismantle it.

Having bought a Minimax panelsaw and removed all the major parts, it took 4 men to get it onto a hydraulic tailgate of a luton which was rated for 550kl...boy did it grunt !

Forget the Punto 8)

This is my Wadkin in pieces whilst i refurbish it. The table is rmeovable on this item and as they are cast items i expect it would be removable on yours too.

When i picked mine up from a school in London we stripped it down to get each component to its lightest form. This was table, motor, motor mount, main body and then guards / accessories. We moved this in small car derived van or city van. There was three of us moving it, but we could have got away with two, however this was with an old sack barrow which we loaded the bits onto, i would suggest you have one of these with you when trying to move it or some other strategy.

My old TS is a Wadkin 10BRT (same as the 10AGS only metric)

We collected and moved this in one piece but would never have managed it without access to lifting machinery - it weighs about 250kg.

The manuals available from the Wadkin website show it can be dismantled. The lower part of the cabinet is pressed steel, the upper part CI. The table unbolts as does the motor.

If you want to move it in its complete state you should be able to drag it with some effort, but if you want to lift it you need 4 strong (and willing) people to make up your team. A pallet truck may be useful to move it around easily - aceess to a small forklift (as in my case) made it (almost) effortless.

Hello Olly (just saw some pictures you posted of yourself with a mask on in your workshop, thought i recognised that hair!) and everyone one else here. Thanks for your answers!

I think the Wadkin site is under some work this morning but I will have another look later.

The saw is £250 -VAT and its in Birmingham. I'm getting it from the same guys I got my extractor from and they seem to take good care of their tools.

Hopefully I can borrow a van AND dismantle it so we can get it into the workshop at my end because we only have two sets of hands.

I have already broken my back moving the disk sander around!

Hi George, it was the 26" planer/thicknesser that gave it away!!

I think you're better off dismantling what you can. Removing the bed would be a big help, can't imagine it would be too difficult either. The trouble with lifting it by the bed is that all the weight will be in the centre, with the motor and everything, with little or no support. I'd imagine that could cause even a cast iron bed to bow... :?

Looks like a decent saw though and the price is right. If you do get stuck trying to unload it at your workshop and want another pair of hands, give me a shout. :wink:

I assume your back problem is why you booked that massage the other day? Tommy lurks around here as well sometimes.

I'm just about to move my saw, I've bought a pallet truck and intend to use some ramps along with some good mates.

Ive just moved my saw (800KG). Its amazing what you can move with a car trolley jack and a few lengths of steel tube for rollers.

I have an AGS10 and I have completely stripped it down and re-built it. Its all pretty easy to do.

Thankyou everyone for your help on my first post, your all very kind.

As it goes, I managed to get another saw from ebay this morning for the same price but its much more of a beauty! Hopefully I am not jinxing it but I can't wait untill this baby is in my wshop!

Might repaint this and the planar to a sexy blue or green again.
