Hi all

I'm planning on putting a business sign on the grass verge by the road, at the entrance to our joinery workshop. We're hidden from the road and think this will help passing traffic find out about us. Does anybody know if this is legal and whether I need to apply for some sort of planning permission? Or should I just go for it and see what happens.

Not really a wood related question but hoping someone has some experience to share

Many thanks

As I understand it if it is an A board or mobile you should not need planning permission, but you could get problems from the highway department if it obscures vision. If it is fixed and more than something like 300mm x 600mm you would need planning permission.
We did have to get PP for our sign with a full set of drawings, Ral colours and font type and size approved, what a lot of work but it has been great advertising, we have been surprized how many students have joined us after seeing it!

You will need permission from the Highways Agency for any signage that is to go on footpat or other area that comes under their remit. I would confirm with them also just check with your local Council as each Council do their own thing :)

You could try the "do what you want" route and wait until you get told to stop/retract the advertisement?

Making sure it doesn't interfere with obscuring any drivers vision of course.

If you are located on a "B" road or less, and not on a corner, I know what I would do, but that's me/not you.

Richard L's post was spot on if you want to be 100% covered.

just do it, the worst they can do is ask for it to be removed. Ifs a portable sign, take it in each night. Make sure its not to big and is nicely done also that it wont blow away. Every part of the UK is littered with business signs and probably hardly any of them are allowed but the council dont bother unless they get a complaint and then have to be seen acting on it. A big garish crappy looking sign is more likely to get a complaint than a neat small one. I've been throuigh all this myself - council told me someone had complained about another sign next to mine that was huge and council told me to take mine down as well. I told them if they did that I would trawl through the town and report everyones sign and demand they be removed- guess what I left the sign up and have heardnothing since and that was 18mhs ago...

also there are two departments intersted in signing issues - planning and highways with each having their own agenda...
