First picture ever posted, and after some encouragement from Mark Sanger I have had a go at cutting a crack out with the jigsaw. So, what do you think?

I was going to do some more cuts, but I thought I'd quit while I was ahead, a finished bowl that was almost what I'd planned!

Well there's a guy with a Can-Do atittude!!

I'm not sure you've quite got the right shape for my taste.

But well done for having a go.

I like it - the lack of symmetry is appealing (maybe I'm just lop-sided!).What timber have you used? It looks a bit like Ash to me - but I'm really bad wood recognition.

I think you made the right decision with regard to the number of cuts as well.

Wizer - my wife's reaction was "that's different", I think she agrees with you!

The wood - I have no idea. I located it in a park near Bolton about a year ago...

A little over enthusiastic on the crack removal IMO but full marks for having a go El-Zilcho
.
Looking at several 'display' pieces using this technique I think it is not for nothing that the incision follows a somewhat curvaceous form.

Jez

I found it.

great first try. If you do another try breaking up the symmetry so that the cut out is perhaps more wavy.

A good way of seeing if it will work or not is to cut out different shapes in paper and move them around on the bowl wall to see what looks best.

Also by taking the shape into the base and curve it around it can appear to just disappear into a fine point.

Well done and well done. keep experimenting.

Mark

Brave man!! As said it perhaps needs a bit more style to the cut but who am I to comment as I balk at chopping bits out of bowls etc. I am going to have to have a go at this. I have a box of bowls I don't klike that won't be missed but may be better for a bit of doctoring. Your bravery gives me the incentive. Mark look out! Well maybe 'one day' as YKW would say

Its not mine !

cheers guys! It's about time time monotony of perfection was broken up anyway! All points taken on board, we'll see what turns up next...

May as well while I'm here...this is a fairly normal bowl, probably the one I am most pleased with:

no chance of taking a jigsaw to that one!

I think it was this months woodturning mag, Suggestion was to print out a few photos of your bowl, then you can draw on them ideas for the cutouts,

Similar i suppose to Mark's cutting out shapes.

I have a feeling this cutting out style might only work well on quite thin walls,

Now wheres my jigsaw, I hope UKW is ready for th edeluge of pics !

Just a suggestion. Why don't you try symmetry first. Then move on to more natural forms.

Apologise Loz & El-Zilcho  , guess trying to input to the forum, get my head around an apologetic letter to someone I missed over Xmas and prove to someone close that I was actually listening to the next set of instructions got the better of me.

And I still haven't done half of what I'm supposed to do today.

I suppose what I was trying to do was to 'force' to form as it were - and for that reason symmetry may be easier to plan. I am trying to think of examples of circular forms with incisions - the only one that springs to mind are lily pads! Maybe a lily pad tea light holder next, with a slight curled lip.

Although to be honest, I have only finished 15 items on my lathe, so I should probably master the basics first, and then move on!

Good on ya, Jez !
Thats the way... 'breenge right in, and see what happens' ..

Brilliant 'can-do' attitude, - hats-off to you there, Sir !

And great pen, too.
:D :D :D :D

I forsee a few 'sliced & diced' appearing in the coming days..
got to say, I fancy a try at it too.

Mr Sanger, ... LOOK what you have started !! :p :p :p :p :p :p :p :p :p

( Great ! long may it continue, too :D :D :D :D )

ahh, thanks Jenx, that has made my day!

To be honest though putting the pen next to the bowl, the bowl is beginning to look more and more like a mishap!

Nice pen :D , I like your second bowl you posted(the bowl with a hole) much better than the first. But you took lumps of wood and turned them into stuff which is all good 8) Keep it up!
When I started I found this website a great place for ideas of different stuff to try. The mushrooms on that site are great fun to do :D

Thanks JT. :D
I have that website in my favourites, couldn't resist having a go at the captive rings - the in-laws didn't believe it was one piece. That was fun!

If you really want to intrigue them do one of these
