Hi All,

I have just started turning and am doing bottle stoppers at the moment. I was wondering if anyone knows what the M8\Coarse wood thread bolts are called? I would like to get a load to batch blanks up and then add the bottle stopper bit when people decide which style they would like.

Here they are, UK supplier too

Note 'carbon steel self colour'. That means they will rust in the same way an old slotted head woodscrew rusts.

Probably a good idea to have some sort of plant to thwart (or slow down) mother nature on this issue.

Fair point, stainless steel ones can be had from Boltbase but might need cutting down a bit

For the most part bottle stoppers here all have integral machine screw, not a separate piece using a wood/metal thread. That makes it easy to use a regular bolt with a couple nuts locked as a mandrel if you don't want to buy a special stopper mandrel. It also means one less thing to come loose. We just thread the stopper blank on to the mandrel, you can tap the thread you want/need to, and turn it. Remove the mandrel and then thread the blank and stopper together. Some people use an insert in the blank like the ones in knockdown furniture but I don't see a need.

So having babbled all the above I would just use a M8 bolt and nuts as a mandrel and buy a length of SS or brass all thread/ready rod and cut it into the lengths you need for the stoppers. Loctite or CA glue them in. Cheaper than buying little hanger bolts and modifying them to work. The machine screw thread will hold just fine in all but the softest woods and even then the threads can be reinforced with CA glue. The stopper and hanger bolt Skeety is using ties you to a suppliers products that add cost and complexity.

If one needs a wine bottle stopper, aren't really trying. 🍷😊
