Big Thanks to Richard - Turners Workshop

I'd just like to say a public thanks to Richard from the Turners Workshop, I put in an urgent order for some of the new Chestnut Hard Wax Oil which my 2 local places don't have yet. I paid at around Midnight on Thursday and it arrived first thing this morning.

So if you need some chestnut products cheaply and quickly, look no further than our Richard.

Just put the first coat on my end tables, european/white oak like olly said it really does penetrate well and highlights the ray flecks beautifully. Its a complete bugger to get off my hands thou and I've ran out of gloves!

Thanks for all the nice comments guys I always try my best to get orders out as soon as possible. I'm glad every one seems to like the new finish as well. It certainly seems to have brought that table up well!!

Keep your eyes peeled, there might well be another offer on another new product on it's way to UKWorkshop members soon......

Wow Shane, thats stunning, hijack away. That walnut must have cost you a pretty penny at that thickness. Is that ABW?

Cool, Yes mate it is deffo ABW.

It cost me nowt as it was left overs from a bathroom job I did (bath panel, floating shelf and cistern surround) the material costing for that job was about £700, so I guess there must be around a oners worth in this table.

I cannot take credit for the design, the original idea came from my old employer (thanks John) although the original was a six foot dining table (which I also made btw)

The two stripes are beech, I would have preferred maple, but the former was also free. The stripes run all the way through the top and line up perfectly with the legs, with the legs also being made in three sections. The top was biscuit jointed together and the frame and legs were fixed using the standard mortice and tennons.

I think It probably took a total of 16 hours to make, but I'm not 100% sure as it was a matter of grabbing a few hours at a time after doing proper work

Machines used were my new axi AW12BSB2 sliding saw, AW128PT T/P and AW19FM morticer, (which I will be doing a review on when I've used them more in anger), and my old multico P/T/tennoner

Shane, that walnut's come up really well! That's what I really like about this finish - it goes in deep without darkening the wood as much as Danish oil does.

Sorry to ask again :roll: but is that really American black walnut??? Whenever I've bought some, I've never come across any boards as stunning as that, which is why I wonder whether it could actually be English or European... Then again, I've only ever bought 1in boards. Perhaps these grain patterns are more common in thicker stock of ABW?

Richard - just out of interest, will the hard wax oil also be available in 1lt tins or larger?

Sorry about the error with your name...my eyes are not working optically at the moment...it's been a LONG week!

Regarding the finish...do you think that if you were to put more coats on and buff them up...you would get higher gloss? I love the satin effect...it is one of my most favourite finishes...but I might need higher gloss on some occasions.

each board was pretty damn big, and the grain was wild on all of it, including the 1 inch, I'll post up the bathroom pics so you can see the grain on that as well...

Don't worry mate, I've been called worse :lol:

In these pic's it has only two coats, and I intend to put a few more to fill the grain, and I'm sure it will get slightly shinier. The tin states that if you want a full gloss finish to use a burnishing wax, but I prefer the slight satin look
