why is it no one in the uk has come up with a bench grinder tool rest with pre set angles suitable for wood turners. would make repetitive sharpening simple. an american woodturner, robo hippy used to sell them, but appears they are no longer available

The wheel wares so that would need some thinking.
Aswell as that, it might be that expensive stainless might be necessary for the job,
as the crud does make them stick and would look rough after a while.

I made my own sturdy wolverine style rest and its just a matter of giving it a good tap to get it spot on...
although I must say it feels a bit awkward to grind a plane iron with, I think I would allow more area for handling tools without the stem getting in the way.

Because offhand grinders aren't really designed to be used like that; the toolrest is just a fulcrum to allow most of the reaction force to be transferred downwards and the remainder to be better controlled by your dominant hand well away from the wheel.

Angles are established by the interaction of both hands to control the tool position relative to the wheel not the toolrest itself.

There are plenty of dedicated tool-grinding options available used (and new), but they all use either cup/edge cutting wheels, or a belt/disk, in order to ensure that the grinding face is flat, meaning curvature of the wheel doesn't have to be compensated for by some complex maths/procedure during setup.

Michael ODonnell has designed and been marketing what you are describing, very good product and easy to fit, been around for many years.
