Has anyone else noticed a change in the quality of Hobbies BB ply? The last couple of deliveries have had a few 'patches' in them and one sheet even had a big hole in one side and a patch on the other
Usually can't fault their service, but don't know if it is worth contacting them to complain, had to use it so got nothing to send back, and don't think I would anyway
Moan over, feel better now

Hi,
I think you should complain it is important to the Company knows the quality of the products they sell as in general they will only QC a percentage of all incoming goods.

I would advise them of these defects in a polite Email or letter. They may not be aware of the problem.

As for patches I assume you are referring to the butterfly shaped inlay patches. I purchase full 8x4 sheets of Baltic birch ply from a hardwood importer, their ply is of the best standard, but from time to time I will get a sheet with these butterfly patches. The reason for this reflects the value in a sheet of Baltic birch ply, where there is a small defect, because of the value, it is worth the manufacturer cutting out the defect and replacing with a patch/inlay piece.

With lower grade ply, the sheet with defects would just be scraped or used for packing etc.

Take care.

Agree with the other 2 replies, When you buy large sheets of decent ply they do sometimes have patches etc, but Hobbies is selling premium ply for fretwork and modelling in small panels and one does not expect patches and repairs especially at the prices charged. Whoever machines their panels should make sure that only the defect free timber is used.

Of course it may be just a fluke that a few bad panels got through unnoticed, Personally I would send Hobbies a friendly email pointing out that you have been a regular customer of their ply and that you were a little disappointed with the last order and could they assure you that in future the panels would be up to their previous high standards. :)

Hi Gill You will be paying top price at Hobbies, and would expect top wood quality wood supplied.I agree with the other posts that you should e-mail Hobbies with your complaint.I am sure that if you not satisfied Hobbies would like to know of your view of the order that you received.

I am fortunate that I live very close to the main importer of birch ply and when I visit their shop they will always cut the full sheets that I buy to the sizes I want so I can get it in the car, they even load it up for me. One side is always perfect in every way with no blemishes or patches but on the other side there may be oval patches and the grain pattern tends to be a lot plainer than the good side.

thanks guys, will let them know, they have been good to order from, have bought tulipwood in the past, and always request cream colour and they have always done well and sent me some nice pieces

There's many grades of birch ply, B/BB mean that small defects are allowed if patched, so if you're buying b/BB or bb/BB ply then that's what you've got.
