 I see the guy who walked out of an open gaol where he was serving thirteen life sentences for robbing banks, (these offences, incidentally, were committed whilst on parole for....wait for it... robbing banks) has just been arrested for ...robbing a bank. He had to be in an open prison, apparently, to be prepared for his release.

phil,,,hello,,,, Sorry for the sarcasm,, but if you want to rob the bank, it"s best to be the head honcho of the bank

It's so ludicrous that it's funny.

I really think they should rename 'Life Sentence' to something else because unless he has drunk from the fountain of youth, he has not served 13 life sentences. (Or even 6 1/2 for good behaviour)

Sad comment on the ludicrous state of our criminal justice system where the idiots in control think that being nice to hard core criminals will make them less likely to re offend. I agree that being horrible to them does not necessarily help either in all cases, however, at least if they stay in prison they wont be back out on our streets raping, robbing and generally spoiling law abiding peoples lives........

Perhaps if we could get rid of the 4000 odd inmates from countries in the EU we would have a bit more room for own lowlife scumbags....

What we need is a nice big island somewhere where they can all be shipped and left to fend for themselves.

Made me laugh the other day, when the bleeding heart anti capital punishment lot were complaining about the botched execution by lethal injection of some yo in the USA who *****, shot and buried alive some poor girl.............seriously? Some things are too good for people like that.

Didn't we try that already?

Yes, but then we got soft........and it seemed to work pretty well at the time....

I am of course over exagerating my position for effect, but in all seriousness, does anyone really think that our current system is either fair on victims or effective in rehabilitating criminal behaviour?

The best rehab rate is Bastoy Island prison in Norway.

You can't compare Norway to any other country. They have so many resources and so much money to throw at everything, its completely artificial. Everything there is completely skewed by the abundance of money from the oil industry. The per capita spend on social projects is massive compared to our budget here.

If we had enough money here to make everyone's lives lovely, by paying massive wages, long holidays, great pensions, full employment, and rafts of benefits, of course, the crime rate would fall and people would be in general, nicer, less hardened and less inclined to re offend or indeed offend in the first place.

But we don't........so you cant just pick and mix aspects of Norways society and expect it to work here, it only works there in the context of Norway's uniquely privileged position. I bet the crime rate in places like Saudi Arabia etc is pretty low as well, and not because they are nice to criminals.

Finally, there is the matter of punishment. I believe personally that criminals should pay and pay heavily if they cant abide by the rules of a decent civilised society. No one forces these scumbags to behave like they do, we all have a choice. Plenty of poor disadvantaged people live decent lives and do not turn to crime - blaming society is totally wrong. And the worse the crime, the worse that punishment should be.

And no messing about. I have just finished a book about the transportation of offenders to Australia. One of them was charged with stealing a silk handerchief valued at one shilling. Because of its value the normal sentence was execution. His defence argued that it was only worth eleven pence and his sentence was reduced to twelve years transportation.

Nonsense. The world has never been wealthier. That we choose to have a section of the population in poverty and not to redistribute wealth doesn't alter this fact.

The book everybody is reading now (or reading summaries of at least) is Capital by Thomas Picketty
His is a Monopoly (the board game) view of economics: everybody who plays the game knows is that it slows down and stops when too much wealth is in too few hands. To get it going again you have to redistribute it.
Real economies are much the same. It's just a question of redistribution - choose your weapons; theft, revolution or democratic taxation. Taxation and public spending isn't a burden on economies, quite the opposite, it's what powers them - what goes around comes around.
