Bandsaw wheel advice

Hi all,
I am after some advice, I have just bought a Startrite bandsaw from ebay and am in the middle of giving it a clean up. the top wheel tyre looks a bit worn, This maybe due to where the teeth run on the tyre as where the blade runs it is smooth.
Can you guys have a look at the picture and let me know you thoughts on the condition. And if needed where would be best to get a replacement?

It has seen better days but not terminal. Try everything else out and see how it performs.

There was a guy selling 14 wheels on ebay a while back but new/refurbished ones are expensive.
OPJ - a member here found a source of materials and did a DIY refurb that worked well. Search the archives for his write up.

Hi, Creeky

You will find its the guard cuting into the wheel when its rased up, I had the same problem on mine, I cut away part of the guard to stop it happening.

I bought one of the wheels from Ebay, they where NOS and it works fine.
Mine hasn't got as much damage as yours and was working fine but I bought a new one as the price was very good.

Thanks for the quick reply guys, Its a Startrite 351 bought off ebay. Do you think I should have a moan at the seller? AS he did'nt mention any damage to the wheels. Or should I expect wear from a machine this sort of age?
I'll have a search about for more info on this forum.
Is it possible to dress these wheels? As there is plenty of tyre left

If there is sufficient material left they can be dressed using coarse glass paper.

That's a good price!

I had a quote from KV Rollers in South Wales and they wanted £100 (inc. VAT) for just the one 16in wheel! :shock:

Hence, why I decided to re-tyre it myself... My saw's been up and running again for several months now. It cuts fine but, I know the DIY job I've done isn't perfect (you can see the blade 'twist' slightly as it's running).

I have just sent of some 28" wheels of to be recovered by this company http://www.bhleakerubber.co.uk/about-us/index.html the cost was just over £100 a wheel + vat, which after calling a far number of companies was by far the best of the lot, and the company knew what i was talking about, offering me different rubbers and other compounds to choose from. They will even recover your traction engine wheels but only up to 8 foot :shock: all in all i found them great to deal with, 50% of a lot of companies i contacted promised to phone me back, usually thing, no call.
I tried searching for vulcanizing services and whilst it did come up with a lot of results it took a lot of sorting through to find people who recovered rollers/wheels, i found searching for rubber roller recovery brought up lots more with some mentioning bandsaw wheels in the info.
