Finally finished the first of 4 Ash bar stools today . The design stage went thru many variations, but ended up with a style that presented me with a challenge at every stage. But thinking about it all my wood projects seem to push the boundaries. The steam bent hoop backs went well, with 4 out 4 successful bends of 70mm x 36mm , they were then carved to contour and shape. The legs attach with 6 circular 32mm tenons into the seat. The hoop joint to seat was routered with a 2” Diam. round nose on a radius to match the seat curvature at that contact point , about s 300mm radius .
The footrest joints to the legs are router cut elliptical tenons . So a lot of time spent making router jigs.
Having used satin polyurethane for the past 40 years I am now converted to using Rustins Plastic Coating. 3 coats each thinned 30%, all 3 coats cut back with 240 Abranet then Renaissance wax buffed. Also used the finish on ‘My Chair’ previous post.
I don’t think I have ever made 4 things the same, so keeping the motivation going to complete the next 3 will be another challenge. Progress may be held up for a while as 2nd shoulder replacement is imminent…. Worn both the originals out !!
