Finally finished the first of 4 Ash bar stools today . The design stage went thru many variations, but ended up with a style that presented me with a challenge at every stage. But thinking about it all my wood projects seem to push the boundaries. The steam bent hoop backs went well, with 4 out 4 successful bends of 70mm x 36mm , they were then carved to contour and shape. The legs attach with 6 circular 32mm tenons into the seat. The hoop joint to seat was routered with a 2” Diam. round nose on a radius to match the seat curvature at that contact point , about s 300mm radius .
The footrest joints to the legs are router cut elliptical tenons . So a lot of time spent making router jigs.
Having used satin polyurethane for the past 40 years I am now converted to using Rustins Plastic Coating. 3 coats each thinned 30%, all 3 coats cut back with 240 Abranet then Renaissance wax buffed. Also used the finish on ‘My Chair’ previous post.
I don’t think I have ever made 4 things the same, so keeping the motivation going to complete the next 3 will be another challenge. Progress may be held up for a while as 2nd shoulder replacement is imminent…. Worn both the originals out !!

Brilliant, not sure how I missed the original post. Unless you’re pushing the boundaries (ie learning) I find it a bit pointless as a hobby.

Actually, thinking about it you are right about pushing the boundaries, that’s what all my projects tend to be driven by, as can be seen in the other projects I’ve posted. To me, making something the same as many others or just following a plan is a “ pretty pointless hobby“ but that’s what floats my boat so to speak; but each to their own. Hence the nature of this forum , a healthy sharing of what we do with this wonderful material.

I find I do hobbies as I enjoy learning something new, building new skills and feeling proud of making something I couldn't before. Whereas a job is often delivering the same thing over and over, with less opportunity to experiment and challenge yourself. I think that's why all my projects push my boundaries every time.

On my current bench build I am ebonising a frame, making it flat pack so I can ship it for my brother's birthday, and using old sleepers that I've had to cut up and make good for the tops.

Yep, very much a sketching start until finally chose, then made an approx model. Whilst the finished stool is quite free form in appearance, and parts of it are, there were some quite tricky aspects technically.
To achieve a near vertical section for the back support in spite of the 35degree slope the hoop the section had to be thick enough to allow sculpting to vertical. This made the steam bending a bit of a challenge.
The hoop to seat joint had to be organic but tight. The solution was to router the seat edge at area of contact to 25mm rad but curved on a 320mm arc, the hoop had to be routed in the same arc with a 50mm diam cutter.
The legs join to seat with 32 mm diam routed stub tenons. The foot rest joins with elliptical tenons. A few random pics show some of the processes.
