Applying Traditional Chamfers on Wooden Hand Planes; How To

Hi All,

I am building a 22" Jointer.

I would like to apply some champers to the corners. ala philly style. I was wondering how one goes about getting that lambs tongue at the end points of the chamfer? Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time and consideration.

I mark out the chamfers in pencil, remove the majority of the straight runs with a combination of block plane and shaves, then blend the ends in with a chisel, held bevel down.
I find files useful for blending in, as well.
Hope this helps - no big secret, just a little practise.

I use a round file to mark the transition, then plane or pare away the bevel.

You can also use a 45 deg bearing cutter which is what I used here:

and it's quite easy to stop at a predetermined point and finish off the chamfers with chisels exactly the same as Philly does - Rob

The woodie is 28" and has an adjustable mouth. Unfortunately I must have altered the temper on the original blade (it lost it's edge after about 2 mins) so I bought another bit of 6mm tool steel from Philly to make a new iron and I'm going to sort out in the next couple of weeks - Rob

Why not retemper the existing blade :?

'Cos I cut the thing too short anyway and besides, it's somewhere at the bottom of a landfill now - Rob

Oh dear Rob, don't you have a recycling centre - that bit of metal might have gone to a good home? You might have been able to trade it in at Penny Farthings?

Rod - you've probably heard of an 'impulse buy' :wink: usually happens at shows when there's a discount too good to refuse, not that I've ever done anything like that :^o ...well, this was an impulse bin :evil: Besides which, I'd cut the thing too short and narrow for it to be of any use to PFT - Rob
