Well obviously it's a "Vintage Rare Wooden Tool Great Item Must See", is it not? :D As the seller surmises, it's a router. Not the most common design though.

Dunno what this is... I know I'll stick it on eBay and see if anybody will pay a silly price for it - is that what you mean?
How very cynical of you

Would you use it freehand? I can't see any fence arrangements.
Using a fence on a hand router tends to be the exception rather than the rule (waits for hordes of router users to disagree...). Generally you do the bulk of the work, cutting a housing or whatever, with saw and chisel and use the router to clean up the bottom so it's all level.

My cynical suspicion is the seller knows damn well it's a router but figures he'll get more people looking with "Vintage Rare Wooden Tool". I used to be such a trusting soul too.

Biggest question (to me) is craftsman or factory made?

I was wondering myself - sort of says manufactured in some places, and not in others.

Gosh, what a dazzling insight. Better go and have a lie down after that - me head hurts...

Yes it's a router, but it doesn't have a built-in firewall. It's also tatty and overpriced.

And yes they were used to finish housings to depth I seem to recall.
