From your description, it does sound like fruit flies. One of the most used organic methods of getting rid of them is to leave a bowl of vinegar out in your garden. They are attracted by the smell, fall in and drown.

For H&S issues don't forget to put a sign up by the bowl saying

NO RUNNING

NO DIVING

NO PETTING

well sprayed some ant killer around yesterday black fly must have read the H+S notices that i put up coz they all gone today :D

My Gran-dad gave me a good tip a few years ago.
If you have a large lawn and have trouble keeping the grass short, use a watering can of water with a tot of whiskey in it and sprinkle on the lawn.

The grass comes up half cut !!

Very funny

We have the same problem in our orchard and they are all around our plum trees - my wife deals with all that sort of thing and I know she has been spraying out there and grumbling that this years crop has been affected due to disease as there are blackfly and fruit flies all over. I will find out what she sprayed them with as it seemed to work - I think it was something organic.....
