This video looks interesting. With some modifications it could be quite useful. As it is there would be excesive wear in one place. Perhaps a slower speed and longer stroke.plus the ability to keep the angle while moving from side to side.

Deeply fascinating!
I sharpen a chisel in much the same way but instead of mechanically moving the stone I move the chisel itself !!! by hand, in much the same way, to and fro, on a fixed stone.
I'm surprised he hadn't thought of that before he went to all that trouble!
I also move the chisel all over the stone to even out wear.
Maybe a Heath Robinson fan?
Makes you wonder what other simple things he's mechanised instead of doing it by hand!

The drill chuck probably won’t last long in this application, and the stone will likely need significant re-flattening after each session. However, it looks tempting to reproduce using an old corded drill and a cheap diamond plate, increasing the wheel size to make each stroke longer. Add a carriage on top of the angled part to securely move the blade laterally while the stone moves back and forth...

Perhaps also 3D print most of the parts... very tempting...

The entertainment value of imagining steam coming out of the ears of the “usual suspects” should not be underestimated.
Some of them even look out for these posts so they can be the first to post disparaging remarks.
We all know by now that they only use a kitchen step to sharpen all their tools, even TCT router cutters, but it’s still fun to see it repeated.

If someone produced a steam powered sharpener, a small one powered by coal, I recon it would catch on; probably an "enthusiast " club would start up and would be hailed as the best thing ever as it would have a traditional bent !

Sounds good. Don't forget to add a few brass knobs - they can really make or break a project.

It's probably been done already, Steam Punk style.
There's a quite a lot of it in woodwork - mad gadgets, heavy retro style planes, brass knobs everywhere, leather aprons, beards etc etc.

Yes, I know that the gods of sharpening disparage me, sending me weak edges and nicks for my sins. Yes, I know that I am talked about in hushed terms as people shake their head and sigh. But I don’t care, I’m proud and I shout that it’s my right to use the tools that give ME the best results. I am thankful to get curly shavings and glossy surfaces, I am comforted to see my reflection in the edge of my chisel, I am happy to know the edge angle is 30degrees. Probably purely because he can and wanted to see if it would work.
I suppose it does work although I doubt it will last long, neither will his drill.

I was expecting critical replies for the video, and I have to agree it looks like sharpening that way for the sake of doing it that way. However I think there could be people who find it intriguing, and might want to try it out. Not as bad as some of the so-called genius hacks I have seen on you tube though.

The idea of holding your tool and presenting to an oscillating object could be useful in many areas I think.
Could solve the tedious problem of slicing bread, or cake. Obvious really; hold the knife firmly in one hand and without moving it, over a loaf or cake, firmly fixed to an oscillating or reciprocating bread board (cake stand)!
Could be treadle operated, or steam powered?
