Hi All, I have another fixings question. I'm looking for a fixing the will securely attach two pieces of wood but allow them to pivot on the fixing. Something like the fixing on the frame of a wooden parasol, which when put up/down allow the two arms to pivot on the rivet type fixing!

If anyone can understand what I've just said and tell me what such is fixing is called and where I can buy some I'd be very grateful.

Depending on the size, you could just use a bolt/machine screw, with a washer in the middle (between the bits of wood) and another washer under the nut. Trim the bolt to the length needed with just a little bit over, then peen over the end with a hammer to lock it onto the nut.

Thanks for the reply Mark, but thanks to my terrible description you've got the wrong end of the stick! What I'm actually working on is a worktop, or section of worktop to be more precise, over a cooker. The worktop is hinged and when down will rest on two legs, when up the legs will swivel inwards with the work top. So the Lazy Susans are far too big and the wrong thing all togather. Again I hope this makes sense!

I knew this would be an awkward thread

When raised, does the flap rest against the wall above the cooker?
If so gravity should do the trick as you raise the flap. You would need some kind of stay to lock the legs, when it's down, something like the iron stays on a paperhanger's paste table.

Is that what you are looking at?

John

Thanks XY and John. Yes you've got me on the right track now. I was thinking along different lines and never considered a gravity fed hinge. And the stays are a good idea too that I never considered. Good call thank you.
