It’s the Daily Fail again so could be nothing?

It's those damned Marxist doctors at it again.

ps How does this constitute 'news'? It's been on the cards for years.

That should be easy to validate, there were far more open fires and woodburners going back so was there also a much higher rate of death ? Most people born prior to the 70's would have lived in homes heated by open fires, woodburners and things like the park ray that used those shaped coal nuggets.

Funnily enough I’ve recently been exposed to similar reports but not on the same subject. We had a short break away a few weeks ago and the Mrs was blown away with how amazingly responsive and controllable the gas hob was where we stayed having many times berated the sub standard ceramic hob fitted at home. We’ve had gas before but it was quite a while back and there’s also an issue with reinstating it at our current property so we started researching possible alternatives that would keep her happy. Turns out , according to media , that gas hobs are killing us all silently with their increased levels of pollutants in the household!!!
Of course the cynic in me suspects that our ‘tech’ has maybe been influenced by discreetly deposited cookies and has subsequently attracted attention from the far out sales wing of applicable appliances.. long story short, she’s very happy with her new induction hob 😉

As you say, Induction hobs are a world apart from gas and ceramic hobs, and lets face it, the way the world is going electric is going to be the only power source available in the future.

I read a report somewhere, and no I don't remember where, that lung cancer was actually fairly rare before the mass taking up of cigarette smoking during the 14-18 war period. Of course records weren't kept the same, but there would seem to be some truth in that.
Most people had open fires back then, the pollution generally up until the early 60s was terrible.
Basically though, as with smoking it's the choice of the individual, at least at present.

Interesting that Richard Doll's original findings on the link between smoking and lung cancer were in 1950.

Which is about the time that the maximum effect on smokers from the WWI period would be showing.

The joke in Zimbabwe - what did you use to light your house before you had candles? Electricity.

I seem to recall reading in the US some types of outdoor boiler are also banned.

However, I thought the industry had fixed this with a sort of afterburn / second burn capability that all but eliminated the particles. Certainly a friend's OWB has a second chamber for this reason.

In those days gone by it was called Consumption as Cancer and Asbestosis were not known or diagnosable.

As said, "consumption" was TB, and that was rife.
However I remember reading an old medical book from the late 1800s as a teenager. It belonged to a friend.
I remember that "lung cancer" was quite definitely included in it. As well as IIRC, that there was possibly some link with pipe smoking.

So I think they probably knew quite a lot of what we know now, even if the tools weren't there for the diagnosis and treatment.

OTOH, I'm not a medic.

My grandmother worked in a small country hospital during WW2, it was then a TB sanatorium. She was always glad of the surplus goats' milk - the patients were given goats' milk as it was believed goats were immune to TB. Few of the patients would touch it so the staff got it. My grandfather died of TB in 1941 and she had two young children, every little helped. Goats of course are not immune to TB.

Aluminium, Copper, and Pyrex pans won't work on induction hobs, just saying .

Do some more digging People. The tobacco industry was clearly informed re smoking/cancer well before the early fifties publications. They, as a block, chose to suppress that knowledge. They, as a block, are responsible for many premature deaths.
A similar P.R. stealth war is being waged by the petrochemical industry, particularly the two bigger conglomerates. They are working on diminishing social awareness of.two great ongoing problems: global warming and plastic pollution.

A favourite quiz question is who did the world most harm? Adolf Hitler, Stalin, Chairman Mao or Thomas Midgley Jr?

Midgely developed CFCs and put lead in petrol.
There are fascinating studies on the correlation between lead in petrol and the rise (and fall again) in crime over the period when it was used.

When I had my new gas boiler fitted the other week, I was discussing with the gas engineer about a kitchen re-vamp including new gas hob and he intimated that within 5 years they would likely stop producing new gas hobs. Interesting!
