All sounds good Chubber, except the weather. I moved down south over ten years ago and it’s warmer in winter and cooler in summer than when I lived around the London area.

How far are you going to be from the border with England (apologies for not knowing the layout up there and I'm too damned lazy to look)? If near to Alnwick there is a Morrisons there, where you will be able to stock up on FDW (falling down water) at VERY reasonable prices! HTH

Whilst our household makes frequent purchases online or at local “supermarkets “ it’s hard not to see the effect it’s had on our local high streets , the majority of which now seem to comprise of coffee shops, charity outlets, hallmark places, opticians ,tattoo parlours, hairdressers/nail emporiums, estate agents ,maybe an e-cig shop, if you’re really lucky a butchers and greengrocer a pub or two and of course, a Greggs/Mac D’s!
Our shopping choices over the years have led to us, as a society ,opting for the cheapest price which has concentrated the wealth in the fewest companies squeezing out the smaller unique traders. My concern is where this is leading us to. Bezo is already stupidly wealthy whilst not being particularly generous to his employees or keen to pay taxes in the countries his organisation operates. Now imagine him buying Walmart or Tesco etc out of his petty cash and doing what society has done to other retailers but all on his own. Weirdly, our choices of what to spend our disposable income on have probably never been so broad , all of course assuming you are digitally astute, for those who aren’t it’s not at all as good.

Yes, online retailing must have had an impact on the high Street, but I believe that bigger hit to high Street was ever increasing costs, business rates, rent, taxation plus the increased indirect costs, like parking charges, congestion charging and that people need to pay just getting into and out of town.
If I have a need to visit town nowadays, its actually cheaper to get a taxi into and out of town. It's more convenient too. (Yes public transport is cheapest but very inconvenient, time consuming, dirty, smelly and around naff)

Online has just been a recent thing, but the decline has been going on for decades;
The big hit to high streets has been people choosing to go 'one stop' shopping in supermarkets. Just consider how many businesses get replaced by an average large supermarket; butcher, baker, fishmonger, greengrocer, deli, chemist, newsagent, off licence, then add all the little extras the bigger ones have like clothing, homewares, key cutting, toys, cookware all things that would have normally been bought on the high street, but are now just picked up in a supermarket.
Then add the retail parks to pull people away from other high street shops; clothing, motor factors, furniture, hardware, even pet shops.

It's not Amazon that's killed the high street, it's UK shoppers not buying enough there.
