Been down to the shed for the first time in about ten days, since the weather has been so bad. I went to take the padlock off and noticed that three of the four screws in the lock had been removed.

It looks like they've had a go at taking the lock off, realised that it was bolted on from the other side and given up. The shed is about 40 metres from the house (judging by my extention cord) and fully visible from my bedroom window.

I originally thought that they'd been in there and put the lock back on to make it look like they hadn't, but nothing is missing. We're in a fairly high traffic area and my unassuming dog has a bark like a rottweiler so maybe they got spooked.

SWMBO is understandably shaken because someone was in the garden. I used to work with oiks like this so I know that they have a tendency to go to a place at least once beforehand to case it and try to make the job as easy as possible for when they do steal your stuff. Maybe they'll be back. It's not the most lucrative of targets though.

Anyone else had any visits in the run up to Christmas? I know crime rises in Nov/Dec as people try to make a bit more money and to get their hands on people's presents. I'd imagine January is a good month if you're interested in taking new tools from hard working people.

Get youself one of the motion sensors that light up the door area whenever anyone gets near at night and a sensor that will alert you in your home if anyone is near or breaks in. They are not very expensive,

I recently installed a wireless burglar alarm on the garage. As it's wireless I installed one of the sensors on the shed too.

£80 from homebase and all easily installed. Worth it for added piece of mind.

A neighbour scared some little oiks off my big double gates where I bring machinery in.They were huddled around up to no good. I smeared copper slip grease on the top of the gates so if they try and climb over they ruin there Christmas tracksuits and 'superdry' hoodies :D . I was tempted to put carpet grippers on the back but I would probably get done.

I trust you replaced the missing screws with through bolts and peined the heads of the bolts over the nuts inside.

I do have a couple of alarms, but I'll probably get a yale style wireless one soon enough.

Problem is, I don't have much worth nicking so it's more of an annoyance than anything. There's not a lot of second hand value in my tools considering I bought most of it cheap anyway.

The thieves almost certainly won't know that, nor will they care so long as they make enough to pay their dealer or get enough for their next fix. £20 for a power drill or router will suit them just fine

My friend, a GP, warned me a while back to up my security as the money had been withdrawn from many of the drug programmes, and scrotes are back to petty crime. It helps to make things and places unattractive - I had a hell of a job getting swmbo not to leave an empty handbag in the car. Make sure next door's shed is more appealing.

Nothing could be less appealing than next doors shed, aside from maybe the filth they'd have to wade through to get to it.

Personally I'd set traps, just nothing you can get prosecuted for. When I go away I litter the dropzone from anyone jumping the sidegate with timber. Good luck jumping over my gate in the dark and not breaking your leg in three places. It's all fair game as far as I'm concerned. If you're not a thieving scrote there's no problems. I got bamboo stake traps behind the shed lol. Well obviously I haven't. My lawyer insisted I say so.

I hate a thief.

Years ago I had an aluminium clad caravan and there wasn't a month went by without its getting broken into. I was talking to the local copper one day and he asked if I was still having trouble. I said I hadn't had any problems for months. I wonder why that is he said. I said probably because I wired the chassis to the mains. :D Unwire it tomorrow, he said, there's a local tramp who's getting on a bit and if he touches it and has a heart attack, you'll be in court for manslaughter.

One of my neighbours was lucky a few days before Christmas.

They've recently had a lot if work done to enable them to store their caravan on their property. It now goes along the side of their house behind a 6 foot fence.

At 5am the neighbour noticed a moving light (not sure why they were up at that time) which turned out to be a torch. He went to look and found someone going through their caravan. Their Xmas presents were hidden in there (wouldn't be my choice of hiding place) and the scrote had been opening them all to select his goodies.
The scrote must have heard him coming out of the house as he ended up chasing him up the road and out of the street.
Apparently the police think they know who it was from the description. I'll find out more next time we chat.

We live in a fairly nice area. He was broken into about 2 years ago and our garage was broken into several months back. Nowhere is safe now.

I agree with the sentiments above regarding the scrotes being fair game. If they choose to enter my property, as far as I'm concerned they also choose to abandon their human rights. If I got hold of one they'd never walk again. Of course the police would be called but during that wait for their arrival I'm certain the scrote would fall over many times.

Many years ago I lived in a rough area. I was sitting on the loo when I heard voices. Ran downstairs to find two lads had just strolled in the front door. One got away but the other got a good kicking. About an hour later the front door opened again. The bruised one was back, with his dad. He looked nasty so I made sure I got the first one in. He got a good kicking too.
I did worry that things would escalate badly. after talking to a neighbour that I got on with very well who'd heard what had happened and that revenge would be coming my way, who just so happened to be a friendly biker from the local chapter whom everyone knew of, nothing happened. I later found out he'd mentioned anyone getting involved would be shot. It's nice to have friends.

I have put PRIKASTRIP (purpose made plastic spikes) on top of my side gate to deter anybody climbing over and a small warning sign (provided with the spikes) near the top of the gate.

I remember my Nana use to have broken bottles cemented into the top of her backyard wall. It was a full height wall about 7' high. I've seen those Prickstrips around here.

Glad the little gobshites didn't make it into your shed BearTricks.

Unfortunately, I think that would now be illegal in the United Kingdom

It's a pity that Transportation is no longer available as a deterrent for Criminals.

There's a lot to be said for sending undesirables to a penal colony. Since the Americans and Australians don't want our criminals any more, we need to start a penal colony somewhere else.

I wonder what the rules are around non lethal Electric fences?

Even if they are non-lethal to 99% of the population, it could prove lethal to somebody with a heart condition for example and that probably would make them illegal too.

There's something wrong with the way the law has developed to protect criminals.

There's NOT the same problem in Muslim countries where they cut off the right hand of thieves.

And I think CHEWING GUM is a banned substance in Singapore.

I have a T shirt - "Singapore is a Fine City" on the front - on the back are about 16 panels with "Spitting in public forbidden" fine $500", "Urinating in public forbidden" fine $1000, "Chewing gum forbidden" fine $500 and so on.
Brilliant place.
