And that he uses a Spiers plane when making them... ?

I always understood that the finest of all longbows were of Italian yew - the yews in Lombardy grew straighter than the English ones.

To prevent the handles turning, especially when the wood "beds in", a 1/8th inch thick leather washer will give more friction,
and may solve the problem. (and easily replaced).
