No hints on possible UK suppliers - bit wary of the response if I phone someone up and ask for some of that redwood what Norm uses :D

Try calling it sequoia, then at least they won't give you pine, if I've got the right end of the stick.

Lol don't know what the definition of a board foot is but 5000 definately sounds a lot :D

Cheers for the sequoia tip too

If you ever go to a place called Big Sur in California (on Pacific Coast Highway) you can see giant California Redwoods that are some of the oldest and tallest trees (300+ feet) in the world.

I have said it before and i will say it again, if you ever get a chance to go up to Big Sur, go, because the forests are beautiful. in fact IMHO, if you drive along PCH (Highway No1) between San Francisco and LA, you can find some of the most beautiful views in the world.
Big Sur is certainly beautiful. North of SF there is a long road out to the north of the wine growing areas in former logging country called the "Avenue of the Redwoods" (the old road running parallel to Highway 101). There is a redwood there at Klamath called the Tour-Thru Tree that you can drive through, although it won't take a Winnibago. There are apparently still four such trees left in California, although there used to be more. Even 1000 year old redwoods don't like having car sized holes drilled throughh them!

Many areas in California and Oregon and up into Washington state have been clear felled and not deliberately replanted and the really large (36in wide and wider) boards are no longer to be found, so much of what is offered as redwood in California is smaller, faster-grown second growth timber. I found redwood to be as hard as nails and coarse and splintery, but as an exterior timber for decking and the like it is extremely good due to its resistance to many borers, including termite.

Good luck finding it here!

If you ask for Redwood in this country you will likely get Unsorted Finish Redwood which is basically a good quality resinous pine.

The nearest you are likely to get in the UK is Western Red cedar

Having quite a collection of bonsai, I always find it hard to believe people will pay over the odds for NORMAL tree seed packaged as something else :?

You will need a lot of fertilizer to get them This BIG

Lol time, fertiliser and a bigger garden I think :)

Scrit I think it must be a different type of redwood on NYW - one of the things that appealed was the way it machined almost like a plastic (as in no splinters/tear out)

Cheers guys, a wealth of info as usual :)

On loads of Norms work you see him nailing bits on or together - how do you deal with the nail holes when it comes time to apply the finish?

A tip I read recently was to apply some blue tape to the piece, then fire through and apply your filler. The filler is then only in the hole.

IIRC I read this in FWW.
