43" TV recomendations?

The 1.2 figure is likely a sugested minimum - if not ideal... I have 32inch Sony Bravia and view at at distance of somewhere between 7 and 8ft. and it's fine. The suggested figure is around 38ins using the 1.2 calculaton... But as I say I find my arrangement is really quite comfortable. I often view from about 18ft; it's at the opposite end of my living room from where my computer kit etc. is located. But for serious viewing of course I go sit closer and thus "pay attention 007..."

I suspected it was a minimum/optimum but was just curious

My wife has no problem where it is ordinarily its just the very gradual darkening she can't put up with, certain films are unwatchable as you can't see whats happening so hopefully a new set will stop her moaning ;-)

Yes I can see you may be in short supply of outlets in Cornwall, not much better in Cumbria but we do have Peter Tyson in Carlisle and there are many outlets in the North east. This is a downside of online shopping because it is something you need to see before a purchase otherwise it would be easy from the likes of marks electrical or AO.

I have 3 Samsung TV's, the oldest is from 2011 and still going strong, the main reason I keep that one is for the speakers, the bezel (frame) around the TV is, by todays standards, ridiculously big, BUT, the speakers the bezel house are superb, far far better than the 50" (2022) sammy in the bedroom, and better than the 55" (2019) in the living room

The l/r one was bought in the springtime IIRC, apparently that is when the new models come on the market (again, from memory) cost me about £650, reduced from 1k+, superb set, stunning picture, but the speakers? nah. At a push and if you're not picky then Ok, but personally I prefer a decent sound system to match the TV.

Anyway the upshot to all this is Samsungs have a very good reputation, and I'd have to be persuaded to change from them.

BTW the living room Sammy was a replacement for a plasma Sammy that gave up after 10+ years of solid viewing.

And another vote for Richersounds, those guys really know their stuff, personally I'd call them, discuss your situation and distance, and see what they can offer, what's to lose?

Yes its a catch 22 situation, the more is bought online the less viable stores become, I often see people posting that its such a shame that such and such a shop are closing, but we are probably all guilty of causing their demise

Just to say thank you for all the replies, all useful information and suggestions

I phoned Richersounds and asked their advice, they suggested the same LG set I had pencilled as a likely candidate, with another Panasonic cheaper set, but preferred the LG

Price wise I checked around before placing an order, I found the same price at two other outlets, one gave free delivery the other wanted to charge but with Richersounds free delivery and an extra ten quid off the first order they got my order

So hope for a happy outcome in five or so working days ;-)

yes the price was £349 but £20 off as a VIP member (clever way to gather information) then a further £10 off for a first order

If all goes well with the TV, I will certainly bear them in mind for the next electrical item to keel over which is all but inevitable at some point

There is a bit of a trend from film producers to make their images darker. They are catering for the high contrast systems in cinemas and high end tvs to give a more realistic feel. If you have a screen with lower contrast it can be a pretty poor experience at home though. It’s one reason I went for oiled in the end.

If it were down to me I would just chuck the TV, but my wife seems to like it ;-)

Even the best Tv picture quality out there cannot make some of the garbage being shown better, you just get high quality garbage. Anyone using a 4K freesat box, manufactured by students and something to avoid so spend the extra on the Tv and don't bother with Freesat.

I don't think she uses freesat, I suspect the same students are mucking around with UKTV play as I cannot get it to work since they changed it, why do these companies want to make their channels unwatchable? beats me
