DSCF0449.jpg

i`m working by skeetoids example by running before walking as it`s more fun.
this is my 1st ever attempt at faceplate turning, please be gentle on your comments, but if i have done somthing drasticly wrong i would appreciate the feedback.
it measures approx 6" high by 4 1/2" wide.
many thanks mark.

Not bad Mark for a first attempt, no obvious catches  (you will get em though  ). When I make an opening like that I have my spindle gouge anticlockwise about 85degs so the bottom cutting edge is rubbing (but no more than 85degs cos the upper cutting edge will catch  ) and gently push in and out to make a rubbing cut on the inner opening edge and you get a nice smooth surface. Just my two pennuth :D

I think this is a great first attempt. Shows a lot more restraint than mine.

Mine was a total mess, but I still loved the process, tripped, fell, skint my knees and broke my nose, but I just get back up and keep running.

Turn in your own style, what you want, when you want, but listen to all the advice given hear but don't be a slave to it.

The whole business of turning is subjective so give it all a shot and keep on running!

Good for you .. thats a great first effort.
Don't chuck it out as you progress onwards...years down the line, you'll be delighted you kept it.

For a first go, its brilliant.
Well done, look forwards to seeing number 2 ! 8)

Oak isn't the easiest wood to turn unless it's wet at the best of times. This isn't a particularly easy shape either. Looks like a good start to me. I am sure we could all criticise but not many of us had 1st pieces as good I know I didn't

I think this is a stirling effort for a first piece, well done Mark! I certainly cant claim to have turned anything this good as a first attempt. Keep up the good work! cheers Steve

Hello Mark it does not matter if it is good bad or indifferant the important thing is you have made a start.
Now keep it up and make every bit a little bit better than the last one.
And take your time it is not a race,

Regards george
