    18 month shelf project

Thanks for all the kind comments! I have a couple of other projects in mind so I shall post them as soon as I can. I'm just waiting for a couple of oak trees to grow, so it shouldn't be too long...

    18 month shelf project

I am keen on the lower grades of timber. Some of the most treasured timbers really fall into this category: burr walnut, pippy oak, olive ash and spalted beech for example. And the more highly figured elm gets the more expensive it is. At the lower end of the scale you get all the character at...

    18 month shelf project

Arghhhh! I forgot to mention one thing.. the machining was done by a really decent joiner! That was back in January. I mean I helped push the stuff through, but he did the biscuit joints although I did some drilling and set the dimensions. I don't want to take credit for the clever bits that...

    18 month shelf project

Following from the success of the last pic, I shall try and post the rest. The second pic is of the shelves in situ. My original plan was to build the shelves (way more stressful than having a baby/buying a house/noticing some random tear-out) and then get a crane and move the house so the...

    18 month shelf project

here's my attempt at shelf posting... You may notice a couple of my favourite tools. A Japanese saw, which is like any other saw, but Japanese which means it comes with lots of brownie points and makes tea in the morning. The other tool is a hammer. People underestimate the hammer: if something...

How do I get images up?!

    18 month shelf project

I thought I'd sling a few shots up of my extremely long-term shelves. They just about qualify as amateur-woodworking-cum-firewood and I've included a close-up so people can see how not to do things. They were made out of low grade ash (lots of knots, olive bits) and I got them planed before I...

    Shellac

Thanks for that! I've applied about six coats and am about to rub it down with 0000 wire wool. Didn't read your thread til after I'd done it. Duh! Still, it seems to be a nice finish.

    Shellac

I've been building a set of shelves for about 18 months now. Finally, I've managed to screw them together and get cascamite (as was) all over them. Hooray! I've applied a coat of liberon pale blond shellec.. and then I read the Charlesworth book. If I take his advice I'll be doing these...

For Sale - a Couple of Planes

Excellent pieces of kit. I had to get rid of mine though: they kept getting in the way of the 63s.

For Sale - a Couple of Planes

What about the Ear and the ESL57s?! :-) And that plane with a long name that I can't remember!

    Finishing a set of shelves

suggestions to improve my spice rack design

Stick a lip on the shelves: The Seventh Law of Spice Racks says that the fifteenth jar you pick up will nudge the fourth jar which will topple the seventh jar onto the floor.

    Finishing a set of shelves

Many thanks for the advice! I feel another couple of months, give or take a year, should see this project finished. The screw rebates are cylindrical (I assume that's not countersunk) and I have lots of little plugs to fill them with. And a nice sharp Granfors to trim them with.. I was going...

    Finishing a set of shelves

Eek. I have sort of vaguely made a set of shelves with two uprights and six biscuit jointed shevles. And now I have lots of questions. 1. Should I glue them up with Cascamite? 2. Should they be sanded and finished before or after glueing? 3. I live in a very wonky 300 year old house. Should I...

    Finishing Ash

Hmmm.. I too have some ash (some of it olive) that needs finishing, on a set of shelves, and my preference would be for something that affects the colour of the wood as little as possible. I find that whenever I read a thread here that answers my questions, I come away slightly more...

    Odd suggestion

I find the Autoglym stuff easier to slather on than the jeweller's grit.. That said, it does slather off more easily too.

Visiting UK in a couple weeks

As a slightly off the wall suggestion, check out the auction calendar for Sotheby's and Christies furniture sales (and maybe Bonhams) and check out how stuff was made a few hundred years ago. If you go on viewing day you can poke around to your heart's content for the price of a catalogue.

    Odd suggestion

Damn! Although I have to admit, as I clicked the 'post great tip' button, I did think I should have run a search through the forum..

    Odd suggestion

I met a chap from this forum, and as happens when discussing precision American planes and hand tools that are way too beautifully made to get any where near a workshop, the discussion ended up with us bemoaning the difficulty of sharpening expensive Japanese damascus steel knives (some of which...
