    Income tax on hobby work?

Technically speaking, if you sell your junk for more than you paid for it, then I believe so, yes. (Though I think it may then be capital gains not income tax). If you make any money from anything you do, assume that HMRC wants a slice I am afraid.

    photo hosting site

I haven't tried this yet, as I don't have DropBox at work, but They have a free account, and you can share files from there. So that might work for some of you...

    A new treasure trove

a google for Gombe timber shows that it is African, seems to be used for veneers a lot. the rest is too technical for me :-) http://lesserknowntimberspecies.com/species/item/131

Taking my business forward. How and do I need to rethink?

Seems like there must be a compromise in there. Can you not work 8 - 9 months of the year (I know a lot depends on contracts), and save enough to have 3 months off making clocks / designing / whatever? ?

    Fitting Ogee Skirting

Firsts and clears only? I also need to build a log / wood store, so I might be able to make use of a mini pack, if I can find a quick plan for one to work out the timber i need.) Thanks

    Fitting Ogee Skirting

Sorry, Im a hobby / diy person, so a big order to me is one I can't get in the boot of the car :$ So its just enough for one reasonably sized room. (I've not got the dimensions with me, but allowing for the inevitable mistakes, I'd say its about 25 metres I need). SWMBO wants the skirting to be...

    Fitting Ogee Skirting

That would be plenty long enough. Longest I could find was 3 metre lengths. Back to google later on I think :-), though if you could PM me the name of the company I'd appreciate it, saves a bit of time and all that!

    Fitting Ogee Skirting

I've watcehd several Youtube videos, and read a few websites, so I get the theory :-) So now comes the practical. The room in question has a Chimney breast, so I need to handle internal and external mitres. For internal corners, I've been practising on some sacrificial bits of skirting, and I...

    Can anybody help?

Can't really help as when I try to turn a piece of wood flat I end up with a big pile of wood shavings more often than not :-$ However I have had a few sucesses, and the keys for me were; 1) Bolting my workbench to a solid structure so I knew my wood was static and I wasn't going to be chasing...

Workshop shed build - planning stage

Heh, sounds similar to the position I am in! Still trying to work out quite what size I need for my new shed, specially as it also needs to house some garden tools, but I'll be watching this with interest1 Being as before this, the biggest thing I ever built was out of lego, I am slightly...

    Beginner after some Plane Advice

Back again, and slightly confused (Though that happens a lot with me!) I managed to get a couple of lengths of pine from B&Q, simply to try and saw / plane down to make legs for the bench I am aiming at making. Up until now, the wood I was using to try and set up my plane was an old pieve of...

Some Initial questions from a Newbie

Just a quick question, being as I have no wood lying around, I need to acquire some. Fair enough, but then, if it is either old pallets, or some unfinished timber form a diy shed, is it still necessary to let it acclimatise for a few weeks in my garage before doing anything? And having already...

Some Initial questions from a Newbie

Hi all, and apologies for a fairly long post. First of all, just so you know where I am at, I am a complete Novice with woodworking tools and skills (apart from where these skills cross over into general diy). I didn't even get any basic education at school, as i was on the cusp of when things...

    Beginner after some Plane Advice

Thanks for al the advice so far. I took the plane apart again, resharpened it and adjusted it, and its workign much better now. though I do spend some time chasing the work mate round the floor :$ The only other table I have there is an old rickety, splintered potting table, but I'll make a bit...

    Beginner after some Plane Advice

Thanks all. I won't be able to tray any of your advice until Sunday afternoon, so I'll try and remember it all, and will feedback next week, to see how I can refine things, if I still have issues :-)

    Beginner after some Plane Advice

Thanks. Its a tricky one, as I have a limited budget each month to spend on this, so I need to work with what I have until I can justify spending more on other tools or accessories like a bench. I'll try with the plane on an edge piece of wood, at least then I can eliminate the equipment if...

    Beginner after some Plane Advice

Its not condescending (to me anyway). I used the shelf as I had it to hand, and the only other piece of wood I have is a piece I want to try and make something from (just a basic coat rack using tenon joints / pegs). Seemed a good place to start to get some basic skills under my belt. I will...
