In times of austerity let's replace all the street lamps

The problem is that all Government departments and other similar organisations such as Local Authorities have a rule that if they do not spend their budget in that financial year they loose it. This means that larger capital spends are often put to one side as money can not be 'saved up for'...

    Dam Busters.

What I took from it was that the ‘revisionists’ who tried to belittle the extent of damage, need to re-assess. The point was well made that the repair of the 3 damns took considerable resources away from other parts of the Third Reich. In particular from the defence of the channel coast and so...

    dealing with subsidence

Andy The real question is, what changed 12 months ago? If there was no movement before then, it is indicative that some external force has occurred approx 12 months ago. Personally from my experience as a surveyor (not a structural one mind you), sudden movement of this nature is the result...

    Olympics?

Sorry Studders to be a nit-picker, but it is the amateur Boxing where the ALLEGED bung has taken place. They run the boxing at the Olympics so the Olympic committee have nothing to do with it. In fact the alleged bung seems to have been to keep a show on the road in the USA. I never thought...

    Meantime design

That's really bad news, I bought some inserts at Westonbirt at the August Bank Holiday and they sounded quite chipper. Where are can you get DECENT inserts now? Phil

    I'm Really Naffed Off!!

I must say that I have been contacted twice by my bank when they spotted an unusual transaction with my debit card so I am happy with them - Lloyds/TSB. I note the difference between Debit & Credit cards, but I personally don't like to see credit card companies charge so much especially when...

    Smells

Olive obviously smells of olive oil and exotic tulip wood has a very distinctive smell. My favorite is Mahuhu. What makes me laugh though is that on a craft stand, everyone says they love the smell of wood. It's the polish they are smelling!! Apart from Cedar and Olive. Phil

Westonbirt Treefest - August BH Weekend

Mike I think if you want better weather we ought to move Westonbirt to the South of France! But I agree with the rest. Phil

Westonbirt Treefest - August BH Weekend

I was doing a pm demo in the GAW tent on Sunday so I had a look round before I started. I would agree about the prices especially on the second hand tools; an old froe for £40.00!!! Also some of the timber (I kept my hand in my pocket). I did however venture into the arcane world of turning...

    I've not killed anyone....

To all those who have just given up, here's a piece of advice from my father. When you have given up, don't get tempted at a Christmas party. He had to do it all over again and it was MUCH worse! I have never smoked because I hated the smell. When my parents went away for a few days, the...

Southern Cross - you can smell the stink from here

Surely, the real problem is that this and many other acquisitions and mortgages have been funded by borrowed money with the following two incorrect premises:- 1 - Interest rates are low and will remain so for ever. WRONG, doesn't anyone remember when interest rates were up at 15%? 2 - Income...

You ever taken yer bird fishing?

The book of Warhorse is by Michael Morpurgo who normally writes children's works and the stage play is absolutly fantasic, you are certainly not aware of any of the 'workings'. It is a real tear jerker as well. I heard that they are making a film of it though not sure if it is live action...

    Old Faithfull

I'm afraid that I still have my gandmother's wheelbarrow which she 'liberated' from the builders when they built her house in 1933!!! Admittedly it now has flowers in it, but it still works as I have to move it round the garden to the orders of SWMBO! It has a metal shod wheel, non of this...

    Lost for words...

I'm with Eric on the use of 'Like'. I had to endure a 2 hour train journey to London opposite 2 students (American girls) who chatted the whole way there using said word at least twice in every (what passed for a) sentence. By the time I had finished working on my laptop and was ready to...

    skew tips

Just one final point before we are all skewed out. If you have a rectangular sectioned skew, try grinding the corners off it so that there isn’t a corner which then digs in causing the dents in the tool rest. Also, do any of you use the skew to ‘rough down’ by turning it so that the long point...

    drilling light pulls etc

Hi Reg Sherwin used to sell drills with a smaller size at the top and a larger for the rest of the drill. This meant that you could drill a hole into which the knot would fit and still have a small hole at the end. Very clever! I don’t know if he still stocks them. Phil

What is the definition of a Basement?

Hi, You might find something under the government planning portal. I seem to remember that it had something to do with the angle that light came into a room but that was before the changes to the building regulations. Phil
